Welcome to Librarium Online!
Now I know its pretty typical (Or at least was when I used to play) But I'd like to go with the theme of a Polish/Russian ww2 force.
Now I have three possible prototypes for my force.
Given the choice I would just buy a bunch of Valhallan models and use them as my infantry.. but that is not financially feasible.
To help give it a ww2 "feel" My Infantry will carry lasguns with bayonettes, and the stocks will be painted wooden. I will only take grenade launchers/plasma guns in my squads.. and not too much plasma want to minimize my use of laser weaponry...
My HWS will be 6 teams of 3 autocannons; this many cannons will give it a very ww2ish feel; i will expand the metal shields slightly to make it look more ww2ish, but not too large as to make the model bigger. (think 37 mm bofors anti tank gun)
My other HWS will be 3 teams of 3 Mortars. (very ww2ish, love mortars)
For armor i plan on using either 2 chimeras and convert them, or 2 leman russ's. In either case I would get a bunch of green stuff and use it to make the turret rounded, to look like a t-34, i would also use a Vanquisher cannon for the leman russ. (thinner, more ww2ish) and if I used chimera's I would get the autocannon model from Forge World.
For my Hardened Veterans with meltasl I will convert the meltas to look like Anti-Tank rifles, would I be able to count them as meltas If i let my opponent know and they looked really good?
So my questions are:
Troops: I plan on using cadians as my main infantry, would it be possible to use green stuff to lengthen their shirts? to make it look like they are wearing the ww2 Eastern style greatcoats? kind of like what the Valhallans and some Cadian officers have?
Maybe make an armored company and use the valhallans as tank crew, this would be a cost effective solution and give my army more of a russian feel.. Not too excited about this one though, Poland did not use too many tanks in WW2 and the Idea of an armored company doesn't entice me too much.
I could also maybe use valhallans as my hardened veterans, would this look off? an army of mixed cadians and valhallan models?
Thanks in advance for any input.
The Pistolier/Outrider box has cloaks and very russian style helmets, you could mix them with cadians for a vet squad (about 15 heads per box, 5 cloaks and a overcoat) - use the lower legs with cadian torso's and make rough riders (mortar bit on a stick for lances).
I wouldn't think you need to change the russes, but Poland had mounted cavalry (R/Riders)
It's also the paint job that'll bring the valhallans and cadians together, I've seen a good Ice blue and white cadian paint job (ink the white black and go back with a heavy white highlight)
Definitely will do, assuming rough riders are even viable.. I keep hearing they stink. (Would like my army to be able to perform in tournaments as well).
Your idea would add so much flavor to the army; Maybe give them anti-tank rifles just as props (Polish cavalry used these).. Russians used them too but not on cavalry.
I think I will go with a fairly boring but historically accurate brown, it'll make the soldiers look weathered, not too sophisticated.. Though I have considered a winter camo scheme.
If you are using Cadians as the base models, then I might raise the suggestion that you file down their shoulder pads. This makes them look more remeniscent of modern day soldiers than WW2 ones, but it will certainly make them look less like 'starship troopers'.
Rough Riders are not the best unit for a competitive player, but when used well are very deadly! I thought about using empire pistoliers as well, but it was my intention to build them to look like cavalry from the Napoleonic wars (I probably spelt that wrong).
And of course, it isn't as hard as it may sound to give Cadians trench coats made of green stuff. In fact, its pretty straightforward. Also, in a Leman Russ box set, you get a couple of torsos without armour. They could also be very handy for an army of this theme.
And finally: Anti-tank rifle meltaguns=awesome! Please do it! I reckon that some sort of rifle grenade would work best. You could also make some Molatovs out of greenstuff. You get a couple of bottles in the pistoliers set, so a guy could have them on his back or something.
Good luck with your project.
Do you think taking 5 in an army would put me at a disadvantage? Or if I used them well they could perform as well as any other units for the points?
Also thought the trench coats out of green stuff would be too hard, But will definitely give it a try; I'm pretty good with my hands and at converting, not great at painting.
As for the anti-tank rifle meltaguns.. I'm definitely gonna go for it, i feel its a good original idea and would add a lot of favor to my army, especially alongside 5 rough riders. And great idea with the molotovs, didnt know the roughrider/outrider box came with that, even better.
Would definitely add an eastern european feel and make my army look more simple and worse equipped, which is the goal;
a group of men made of flesh and bone fighting all of the horribly brutal creatures and creations of the warhammer world; with only their guns to protect them.
Thanks for all the idea's, will definitely give each of them a try, hopefully it'll work out.
I use 10, or two squads of 10, and basalisks / indirect artillery - your opponent has to move towards you and you can charge. a power sword and two meltaguns make them more effective after the charge as well.
Sorry I didn't post this link earlier, but I've only just remembered it. Here it is.
The whole range is pretty interesting, but in particular check out the head sprues. They all fit GW models fine, and ones from the militia range could look really good. They all have gasmasks, some have covered helmets, some have plain helmets, and others have those winter-hat things that the russians wore. There is of course, all the other stuff. Some of it looks very sci-fi, but some of it could be ideal for you.
