Okay so I ummed and arred about what colour scheme to use on my new Tyranid army, I asked the opinion of you guys then completely ignored it (sorry about that). Finally though i've come up with a scheme that I like.
Here it is: (ignore the blue in the joints, that's just blutack sticking everything together for the time being)
The photo's make it look like the body is the same metallic as the carapace but it isn't, it's flat black with grey highlights. Oh and I haven't done the base yet so ignore that.
Comments and criticisms welcome.
Looks pretty interesting. Bearing in mind that I'm far from an expert (and I've not seen it in real life) I'd consider widening the level of contrast between the carapace and the body parts, perhaps some very light white colored trim and highlights on the outer carapace edges. Also, a little more pink might help keep things interesting, maybe the hoofs? Idk, that's tough as you don't want to go in too deep (ie have too much pink).
Still, congrats on your work dude.

That looks really good. You could do some minor touch ups, but of course these are gaunts we are talking about. Try to make very model look great and you're going to be painting for a long time.
Definitely would suggest some minor touch ups, and once you base him he should look solid. Just remember that 'Nids are meant to adapt to the world they are devouring, so maybe base them with some grey/ stone painted gravel.
Also, please remember that we here at LO are not going to be playing with your army, you are. So make it something YOU love!
My only advice is maybe to make it a little lighter.
My Nids are Black with Imperial Purple(discont.) carapace.
From a distance or in poor light people think they are not painted at all!
There are far too many for me to try repainting them though.. so purple they will stay

Cheers guys. The carapace and body do have a higher contrast than you can see in the pictures I assure you.
One side of it currently has better highlights than the other due to the method I used. I'll be adapting this to give better results in the future.
The bases are going to be black gravel with some red lava poking through the cracks which should look great.
May highlight the carapace with a lighter metallic but otherwise I don't want to do much more with it. The plan is to make the carapaces more metallic the higheer the save on them is, thinking of using a pearlescent silver for the highest save to really make them stand out.
The only thing I may change is the holes in the tail and head. Friend suggested more bone in them which I did try on one side of the tail, could also use pink. thoughts?
I really like it, well done mate!
Also, considering it is a gaunt you might want to leave it as it is, considering how many more you have to paint!
One thing i'd suggest is do some more on the teeth, just a wash of something like Gryphonne Sepia and a retouch with the bone colour will give a greater contrast and make them look more teeth like.
Looking forward to seeing you tackle one of the bigger creature- such as your trygon or a Carnifex maybe?
PLAN CLAN MAN!!
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man- S. Johnson
Or maybe anoher layer of Gryphonne Sepia? It's already had one wash of it.
