Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'd like some ideas for making my own IG commander from scratch or for extensively converting an existing model.
All suggestions appriciated!!
Ive seen good conversions out of plastic cadian bits with tank commander heads and power weapons sprues.

lets see, i use Space marines legs, catachan body, arms and a cadian sergeant head shaven down so i could fit a helmet on him with a chaos bolter. pretty easy and

How exactly do you scratch build a model though, because if I knew then I'd make my commander that way.
Don't know if remember the old Grease Monkey model from the Last Chancers. The one with the bandages and the bolt Pistol. If not then Look Here
You could quite easily convert him into a Heroic Senior Officer.
Just an idea.

that gave me no information at all, do something like this [using my army as an example]:
They are a regiment of my own design, they are highly devout but instead of frothing fanatics they are disciplined and ordered. They come from a very spartan gothic cathedral/hiveworld and are often called to serve the inquisition in wars of faith. They use grey and black cadian models and steel legion for the armoured fist squads.
They're a garrison force using cadian and catachan figures in green and black.
All the last chancers look nice, look through them. Also combine bits from the catachan and cadian sprues. eg cadian clothing, catachan forearms with a CCW in each hand and the catachan sentinel driver's head [the 1 with the cigar].
