The Grot Rebellion
The Grot Rebellion were my first ever heavily converted guard army project, full of a lots of humour and character the army won the ĎBest Armyí award at Open War 9.
Feel free to browse the old galleries of the models in the army: THE GREAT GROT REBELLION
Anyway that was a long time ago and now I feel itís time to revive the grots once more. The Grots have been out of action since 5th edition came out since I didnít like the idea of losing the game on a roll of 5 or 6 when the dice was rolled. The army was built around suicide squads with the 3 vet squads and rough riders. But now that I have completed my Renegade Mechanicus Army itís time to rebuild the rebellion.
Whatís Gonna Change?
Well first off the original army was very infantry based, as you can see from the picture below there was a selection of characterful models for infantry, special weapons, grenadiers, rough riders and vets.
First off weíll be a complete re-paint as the army was made before foundation and washes so I wanna try out painting a grot with the new stuff and see if it is an improvement on the old ones. If so Iíll be looking to redo the whole army.
The old codex allowed me to parachute the grots onto objective with the Drop Troops Doctrine but with that gone Iím going full mech with them.
At first I was trying to think of a way to convert chimera tanks, and then I remembered I had made a chimera conversion originally which was called the Doom-Vee.
The Doom-Vee was a fun looking model but sadly ineffective and un-needed in the old codex so it was quickly replaced with the heli-cookas 2 deep striking sentinels with heavy flamers. Of course changes need to be made to the old model such as changing the weapons: the old model had the turret that counted as 2 heavy bolters now instead I plan to add a chimera turret on the top to make it easier to recognise and add a flamer at the front, perhaps were the lights are on the left.
But that isnít the biggest problem, the Poundland toy I got the wheels from is no longer available so I need to find another cheep toy I can rip the wheels of and paint (rubber wheels are a big no). Anyway weíll see what I find.
One of the advantages of converting models is that they can easily be used as something else, as long as the model looks right for the role. Anyway I have two of my favourite tanks from the original army and Iím giving them new roles.
First off is the ĎGAZAí rocket platform in the old codex it was a Basilisk but for the new codex itís gonna be something different. At first it was going to be a Deathstrike missile launcher but I eventually decided not to do that as it just didnít seem like it that small rocket could do the damage.
I now intend to use it as a Griffon Mortar as it perfect for representing the Grot bomb with is low strength and ability to re-roll the scatter dice representing the fact the missile piloted.
I also plan to some grot officers that will be gathered around a gaming table calling in air strikes to represent a Manticore, these will be made so that they can be changed allowing me to swap between the rocket platform and air strike scout.
Now ĎThe Little Grotí was by far my favourite but Iím unsure about the effectiveness of Hellhounds in the new codex, so hereís a question: Do you think I could use ĎThe Little Grotí as a Chemdog, surely a grot's cooking from a fast food cafe is bound to be highly poisonous and corrosive. Spraying enemies with the 'sunday special' lol?
What On The Assembly Line?
4X Vet Squads,
A 2nd Hellhound,
A 2nd Leman Russ,
A 2nd Grot Missile Platform,
And a set of Objective Markers.
All of which I can't wait to build. Especially the Doom-Vee Chimera which will be suprising cheap thanks to the 'Leman Russ Upgrade Sprue' GW have released for £8.
Anyway I look forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions?
This sounds like a lot of fun
I can't really give any tips on effectiveness, not having any experience with guard, but maybe I'll be able to help out somewhere else along the way.
Like, for instance, saying that I think the Chemdog is a perfectly reasonable assumption given the usual standard of gobbo hygiene and cooking!
I saw this army in the warhammer world cabinet alongside your machanicus count as using the chaos daemons codex! . Some very nice conversions, but i never saw your mechanicus lord as it wasn't there for some reason.....
for effectiveness i suggest vends/valks, and a grot sly marbo.

Funny you should mention that...
The New Rebelz
First models off the line are the standard troopers, I need to get all 40 of them repainted for their appearance at Warhammer World in January before I can start work on anything new.
When the grots came out the foundation and washes were not out and I used drybrushing and watered down paint to complete the 'Original Models' I've become a better painter since I did the original models so I'm now after a more smoother and better quality on the models and I'm hoping I've done that?
The Blak Opz Agent: Grothopper
Another model that was completed rather quickly was 'Grothopper' some of you may have seen the Grot Ninja model from the original conversion that I used as an Eversor assassin.
Seeing the new guard codex Marbo's rules were perfect for him so I quickly replaced his power sword with a demo charge and repainted him. I look forward to fielding him.
I hope you like these models, I'll have the new command squad done in the next few weeks.
You so need to put the image of frodo and the ring bearers on ehre .
Ha! Grothopper! You'll never see him coming... (Primarily because he's so tiny!)
Looking good so far. You're just repainting some units as is (or with minor modifications), right?
Grotsnik Leader Of The Grot Rebellion
Behold the brains of the outfit Cononel Grotsnik, simple conversion done using the old Gorkamorka red gobbo and the old Commisar Yarrick's oversized hat. The perfect combo, add a few weapon changes and you have a great conversion.
