Here is my latest commission piece from War Gaming Scenery by Daemonscape : Gaming Scenery : Games Workshop. Its come a long way away from the original concept art after alot of discussion and I think I have got a good character design in my head for this one. Going to be alot of mechanical bits and tubing showing through on the neck and chest areas on the front. The exposed spine at the back is made from plastic card and some metal rod (a couple of bits have come off and need to be repaired). The basic idea is to smooth off the texture around to the front to provide some variation in the skin as it goes into the mechanics. I will have skin stretched over some of these metal parts as well. The head will be tilted forward with a snarl and tentacle type tongue. Lets hope he is all nice and gruesome when he's all done......
Comments and crits would be very helpful right now.....
That's some really nasty stuff. I can't really comment on anything since this is way beyond my abilities, but I can't wait to see it finished.
That's very cool. I don't know how to sculpt that way but may you could have the tendons/flesh connecting to the spine less uniform. The idea I get from the skin is it's warty and distorted, the metal spine is very rigid by comparison. The flesh that seems to connect to it may have some distortions in it. Hope that helps.
Can you show some of the concept art of the face?
Leech, I know what you are trying to say and the kind of look you mean and this was my initial intention to do it in that way. I think the spine I eventually designed is a more simplistic one, a more detailed spine made out of metal parts only would have taken alot more time and I'm trying to keep within a specific time frame with this sculpt. Maybe I'll play around at some stage and create a more intricate metal spine for some other sculpt. In this shot the spine is not yet divided on the side so that may be contributing to your perception of it and skin etc wont be added until all baking is completed as obviously the spine will melt if i use polymer clay over the top of it! The idea is that this is some kind of futuristic plague demon but of both skin and metal. haven't really created any fluff or decided upon a name for him yet. It is being produced for someone lese so he may have hisown ideas. I unfortunately havent got sketched reference or concept work for the face as we have moved way away from the orginal concept art. I have it in my mind but it is still subject to change in its details. If you want to see the original concept you can do so here..... A D O G S B L O G G: New Commission
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them.
Here are some more photos to show the lower front and the roughed in face. One side of the face is actually complete now so more photos tomorrow of that. Imagine Aliens, predator meets planet of the apes and a big tentacle tongue. Should give a rough idea of what to expect. It is by no means final however but hopefully the client will like it and approve it because I like it myself. We shall see. If you like it to all votes for or against would be welcomed, maybe do a poll or something??
I understand what you mean there about the spine, too much would take too long and maybe over-complicate it.
I like the work on the face there. I think the shape of the forehead is well done. It adds expression to the bust. I think it also helps to show the demonic influence on it as the head looks deformed in a way, but still like it may be intelligent.
Very cool. Loving the progress on this. Keep it up!
It's shaping up very nicely. Can't wait to see it finished.
No jelly babies here this time as I ate them all yesterday, anyway.....
Here is WIP 4 - the final photo for this WIP before all the finished shots. It shows the other side of the face. There is a little more work to do on it, the left canine and tidy up the bottom lip, bits of smoothing, final checkover and then its ready to be shipped on out and uploaded to my cmon gallery. And oh yeah, have to bake it lol.
