Im trying to make a portal like one that might be found on WAR in the chaos starting area, or WoW if you play (OS entry portal) Im thinking 1/2 to 3/4 of and in. thick and about 6 or so IN around. Would anyone have any ideas or pictures on how to do this
Wondering about a clear cd cover with the pattern painted on very lightly, ultra bright led or two in the base, covered so that the light can only travel through the plastic, I would think that to get the painted areas to light up you would need to disrupt the path of the light in the plastic, scratching around the pattern might cause it to light up the edges, maybe a heavy duty pin to make a million small dents might work to fill in the rest.
Not much to go on sorry, havent done anything like this (yet)
Bugbait is on the right track. another way to get some nice swirl pattern with TEXTURE on the "gate" and keep it semi clear, is to scuff up the center of the CD case, then go and pick up the school glue, or PVA that dries clear.. check this: CLEAR GLUE
then squirt the glue in the scuffed area (nice sized pool) and then once it begins to semi harden..take said heavy duty pin and make swirling motions in the glue, making the swirl effect now 3d!
Once dried, add some green or blue washes...and you'll have your gate.
As for the columns, ...i can't get over the versatility of the Hirstarts molds.
try this one: Hirst Arts Columns
Rome wasn't built in a day, Either should good scenery.
I was actually going to go without the swirl in the center, or if I did make it removable so troops can move through it.
But I think I may have figured out how to make the outer ring with all the talk of CD's. If you ever get a spindle of blank CD you have that bottom bit that they sit on. and while typing this I think I may have figured how how to do the pillars. With the middle spindle themselves. What do you guys think?
(And how would you add texture with out using molds. I'm horrid at pouring them, tried to make some ice trey tank traps and it didn't turn out that well.)
I thought you were going for the Chaos portal in the starting area?
There is something a little similar to this shown in the white dwarf for this month which is used to represent a chaos gate or portal or something like that. It uses pilars from the arcane ruin set to provide either side and the actual portal itself is painted on card between the two uprights.
Using the pilars from arcane ruin set you will need to add some spikes from somewhere the chaos rhino upgrade sprue or something similar.
If you are going to make the portal removable then my recommendation would be to have the portal slot in from underneath so that when removed there isnt a large slot in the top which might detract from the overall look.
I've had an idea to make a chaos portal using clear silicone caulking. If you squirt out some caulking on a piece of glass, mix blue & green aint into it, and then spread it thin on the glass, when it dries you end up with a semi-transparent rubbery surface that can be stretched or cut to your final shape.
