Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have a good size IG army that I am painting in a mars desert paint scheme. I like the scheme, but I'm growing tired of painting the same colors and I feel like I'd like to try a tallarn or even a catachan color scheme.
This might be one of those questions that you can only answer yourself, and probably pertains more to people with large horde style armies, but I was wondering what others have done when they reached this point?
Sometimes I feel like I'd like to start from scatch again, but I don't really want to buy a second IG army or strip all the paint off of my existing army (it would feel like a waste). I have probably about 1200-1500pts worth of maybe 3000 pts painted at present.
Anyone had a similar experience?
Hmm I'm painting over 6000 pts of IG at the moment - commission , and I know how you feel - try to invert colours maybe, or just go to your hobby store, get a vampire/dwarf hero and do something different ??
Yeah that's a good idea. I do have my VC army that I could switch to as well. I think I'll take a picture of my IG army amass and maybe that will motivate me to have it look complete as well.
Taking a break is good - now I'm doing a chaos knight, after that finishing veteran guardsmen + spawns and starting vehicles
I'm actually doing Martian style guard myself, do you have any photos?
One way of dealing with this is to paint something fresh and different. You could either start a new army, making sure their colours are quite the opposite or different of the current one; this would give you the ability to swap between the two when painting. Or you could just paint up the odd random unit, character or mini that you like. I quite often do the latter - it gives you a complete change of pace and it's fun to paint different things.
Another thing that will help with your problem (and make your army look better) is to consider how the scheme might vary from unit to unit. Perhaps your veterans will look slightly different from the ordinary guardsmen, or the command squad, or the characters... I'm not saying invent a new scheme (though you COULD), I'm just saying vary it enough. Sort of like taking a color scheme on an ordinary space marine vs. a scout from the same chapter, or a terminator, etc. Look at how the models in different units look different, and adjust your scheme to fit.
Ask and you shall receive...here are some pictures.
Thanks for the good suggestions everyone. I have been straining myself to think of ways to use the colors I've picked and vary unit colors at the same time. My vets are in black uniform...sort of like an elite strike or swat team. and I started giving my commander silver armor...I might continue that with the rest of my ccs. I wanted to play around with squad markings for my tanks...the eradicator has one allready, but I'm not sure about my other tanks. Although, arranging my army and taking a pic sort of made me like my paint scheme a bit more and motivate me some.
I was also thinking of numbering my squads and giving my HW teams and SWs shoulder insignia based on their weapon type...ie a flame for a flamer...that might make things a bit more interesting.
I'm liking lots!
One of the things about a big army that looks great is coherencey! You've got it.
Your idea about weapon/squad markings is good too. I'd defo sketch your ideas out before painting so you are clear on what you want to do......you could even scan them in and let us lot have a butchers. ;-)
