Welcome to Librarium Online!
Was wondering if anyone has attempted and had any luck with using magnets to swap weapon/item configurations on their armies. I have had little luck myself, as the magnets do not seem to be strong enough (especially for metal models). So has anyone attempted this? If so how did it go and what sort of magnets did you use. I saw magnets for this purpose on e-bay at $16 US for 100 but not worth it if they don't work or i can make them myself cheaper.

I don't know what army your talking about magnetizing, but I've been successful magnetizing my special weapon models in my Space Marine army. I pretty much drilled a hole in the chest, and one in the arm that holds the weapon, and put THESE magnets in. I would assume if you were playing any other 40K race, and the 25mm fantasy models, these magnets would be small enough to fit in the arms.

I have used magents the same as recomended by Acez (but from a different seller) for use on my necromunda gang. They work very well it does take some thinking however, not all models hold the same type of gun the same way.

My tanks are covered in magnets, and I have a Magni-fex and a Magni-Tyrant. Rare Earth magnets are your friend!

I use rare earth magnets alot...you wouldn't want to put a credit card near any of my tanks . I've magnetized all my Leman Russ weapons (Sponsons, hull, stubber, and turret), Chimeras, and Vendetta/Valkyrie weapons. If I have time tonight I'll take some pictures. I was going to post my method for magnetizing my Leman Russes (the old ones), but now that the new tanks are out I'm not sure if it would be useful.
I've recently used rare earth magents (3mm and 8mm dia) and found the following:
3mm is sufficient to hold even terminator arms but aren't strong enough to keep the termi arms up/forward. Most of the termi arm positioning is sufficent for arms-by-my-side psoitioning without looking too bad. I would like to try 4mm next time, although 3mm is perfect for my current hand-drill
8mm works perfectly for my Defilers - i can recommend that for turret-jobs and the like.
Don't take this too seriously. But IMHO people who magnetize are wimps. Man up and glue the ****ard on if you realize that it isn't working for you live with it, man up and live with it.
I have successfully magnetized my black templar army.. to include my vehicles allowing me to switch from a rhino to a Razorback to a predator... And being able to switch between any configuration of weapons allowed for each.
I used magnets from Amazingmagnets.com utilizing the 1/8'' Dia x 1/32'' Thick Disc.
Honestly, they work quite well.. The only problem I have had with them was me not pairing the arms up correctly, and sometimes shoulderpads make a tight fit for removing and reattaching. I also had to deal with the rhino hatches, and had to configure a way to make those magnetized to allow the sponson insets to be attachable..
I will be getting some pictures of them and placing them in my black templar WIP project thread.. All the plastic minis you see in there so far magnetized minus the dread which doesn't need to be. I can also take pics of where the magnets are located for how I accomplished it.
Hahaha, funny mentality.
But in all honesty when you have real life expenses and dependants and no one to buy your toys for you, toy soldier expenses take a back burner. I personally haven't magnetized any infantry models, but I think haveing the ingenuity to fully magnetize a tank demonstrates a persons quality much sooner then spending extra money on models because you'll never use your asthetically pleasing non-game-legal LRBT with three sponsons, a multi melta, and a baneblade cannon stuck to the side of it (I've seen some funny novice builds) . But, to each his own.
