I've got one of the older GW pin vices. Only problem is now when I use it it's quite hard to turn and feels like the parts toward the palm end are grinding together.
What's your recommended oil/lubricant for these and what's the best way to apply it?
I'd chuck on WD40 a few times, tightening and untightening it as you go.
Not from experience with that vice, but that's what i'd do.
I'd also clean up any surface in contact with the model with wd40 on it (use the tube as well)

I don't really know that much about the GW pin vices and how they're put together, but I'm wondering if a decent bearing grease might be the way to go. You could probably find something like it in an automotive or even a bicycle shop unless you happen to already possess some. Just a case of smearing it in to the join, wiping off the excess and you should be fine.
But WD40 or some other form of similar spray lubricant may be easier to apply, depending on how the pin-vice is put together.
If you're talking about the spinny part that pushes against your hand as you use it, it's getting gummed up with a mixture of sweat, dead skin, and microscopic shavings of metal. A rinse in degreaser and then a touch of lubricating oil should do the trick. Don't JUST oil it. You'll loosen up that gunk for a little while but it will just collect more gunk as you give it a sticky substance on which to bind.
I'd recommend 3-in-1 oil (a general purpose household oil); I use it on my guitars on the recommendation of some local guitar experts; not that I don't think WD-40 would do a good job. I guess just use what you have readily available.
I agree that it needs cleaning and a not-too-overzealous application of oil.
Will give it a shot and let you know.
Or you could just suck up 5-7 bucks and buy a new one. I find GW hobby supplies over priced and rather sub-standard. Especially their pricing on GS, what a joke.
FluffMaster on a mission to turn people to the Sisters of battle, yes folks it's all about SoB squads in Repressors with lots of flamer templates for the win.
Jeez, you're right about that. I was pretty bummed when I found out I really over-payed for my first two strips of green stuff.
I'd probably agree with just buying a new one, actually. It won't be that much more expensive than getting a can of WD-40 or a bottle of 3-in-1. You'll probably find something higher in quality, and my pin vice is very easy to take apart and clean.
