I'm looking for a good tester model. By that I mean a model that has an assortment of different surfaces (metal, hair, clothing etc.) to paint up to get the hang of all the different ways to paint different surfaces. Could anyone recommend a good model for this? (28 or 30mm preferred.)
Edit: The reason I'm not naming a specific army is because I'm getting into RPGs so I really only need one to try different techniques on different surfaces.
I can't think of anything off hand myself, at least not in Warhammer fantasy/40k, but my game store sells alot of metal models, fantasy and sci-fi, for pretty cheap, and they have alot of surfaces, hair, flesh, weapons, armor (metal, fur, chitin, ceramic) and clothing, so they should be fun to paint
Empire heroes and lords are pretty awesome sculpts and should give a fair bit of good practice for DnD. Same goes for all heroes and lords, really - but i'd imagine the human, elf, dwarf and vampires ones would be the best.
Oh, I see - my apologies, I misunderstood your reply.
The only companies/games I can think of off the top of my head that have good quality miniatures are Privateer Press and Infinity, however both are similar to GW prices (or higher, in Infinity's case - depending on what you want). I suggest finding a local store that sells an assortment and having a browse through the models. There are usually several cheaper companies in stock.
