I'm building a Skaven army to accompany the new Warhammer Edition and I had a very clear theme in mind. I've always loved Clan Skryre but I didn't want to be stuck into a theme of just them. So after some thinking I created an idea for my own Clan, which prides itself on mechanical wonders that equal those fo the Great Clan.
So what I need are more mechanical or different variations on existing units. Specifically, Warp-Fire Throwers (hate the model), Warp-Lightning Cannons (a little to plain) and a Hell Pit Abomination.
My idea for the HPA was an Empire Steam Tank as the starting point. Shave off all the Empire iconography and replace the Engineer with a Warlock Engineer. Redecorate the hull with Skaven bits such as shields. I'd also sculpt a multi-headed rat neck coming out of the cannon barrel to represent the abomination the lives inside the hull.
Not to sure what to do for the others, I was thinking about sculpting a Warp Lightning Cannon onto a monsters body but not sure of a suitable model.
If you could swing buying some Forge World parts it would make for an INSANE abomination. Some sort of furry demon with multiple tails.
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
This sounds like a great idea and I look forward to seeing some picture as it progresses.
As to ideas for models there is picture of a warplightening cannon mounted on the back of a rat ogre in the warhammer rule book, I have also seen one carrying one like a marine carries a bolt gun.
Abomination idea sounds really doable, or just have it as a tank withiout the heads and have a close combat weapon mount on the front and giant rat powered wheels on it.
If you're really into this conversion and can find the bits, what I would suggest is taking the legs off of one of these bad boys: (Chaos Space Marine Defiler)
Removing the stuff from the sides of the hulls and using those legs would give a "monstrous" feel to the machine. And the multi-headed rat coming from the cannon slot is also good.
Fielding one of these guys would make your opponent himself take a break test before the game!
As for the Skaven "heavy weapons," I have seen some very good conversions using Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons Squads as bases and going from there. Some ideas are using the stand and gun shield and losing the bolter, replaced with an IG flame thrower? Just throwing ideas around.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Sounds like you've got some really great ideas here, as have the commenters (Although I must admit I had thought about warpfire throwers/warplightning cannons held by rat ogres -leadbelcher style- myself). Will certainly be interesting to see what you come up with in the end. For the Abomination, I reckon you could essentially meld together some Rat Ogres and, if you wait a little, the new plastic Daemon Prince model. I don't particularly like it but some of the parts could be great for conversion work, and this seems like a pretty good opportunity to use it.
To keep the entire mechanical theme going, it would be great to see some sort of steampunk-style bionics melded into the flesh of the Abomination and Rat Ogres in your army. If done well it would look lovely and really portray the Skyre-esque theme you seem to be aiming for without having to focus entirely on Skyre units. I'm pretty sure I've seen sets of small cogs and the like, similar to those you'd get in watches and I reckon they'd look great if implemented well.
Thanks for the feedback, good ideas here. I think a Defiler would be a bit to expensive on me right now, almost $100 per cannon. Similar ideas of my own were shot down by pricing, like a Stegadon and such. Not to sure on that front, it's always a pain balancing money and creativity.
I like the little cogs idea, not sure where to get those but worth looking into. I want to do the heavier conversions on center pieces like characters, war machines, things that stand out. My army will be Slave heavy so I can really put a lot of time into the other things.
IG Weapon Teams is a good idea, those are pretty easy to snag second hand. I think the IG Flamer is a bit small for the sheer damage of a Warp Fire Thrower, but I could find something, even if it's just PVC pipe for a bit bigger barrel.
I'm also trying to think of something more mechanical for Gutter Runners. I use Slings but I want to move away from the Clan Eshin feel, because I have my own lore. Maybe some Empire repeater handguns? Not sure how easy it would be to get a lot of those though.
If you really feel up to some serious conversions you could model some skaven in some kind of mechanical combat rig, and use them as either rat ogres or an abomination.
For empire repeater handguns or any bits in general look no further than this site here or this one here. Its a bit unpredictable when they have items in stock, but they are very useful and reliable.

A good place to look for really cheap/broken watches for cogs is Ebay I have to say.
Really liking the potential here and looking forward to seeing stuff being created =D
I do apologise, my laptop failed and double posted =/
Well I might as well say this now; If ye go onto Ebay and just look for really cheap, broken watches or job lots, i.e a big bundle of cheap watches, the gears, cogs, etc are really excellent to use for modelling. In fact they're rather quite popular in jewelry making, but that's another story
I'll be experimenting with a load I've recently bought soon as a steampunk space marine is on my to-do list, hehe
