Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello, I've recently started hobbying again and are currently doing an Ice World themed Imeperial Guard army. The fatigues (cloth bit) of the Guardsmen is Skull White. Its being painted over a layer of Fortress Grey and is looking a bit thin.
Am I doing something wrong or is it just a matter of building up a couple of layers?
-Cheers in Advance.
Building layers is the key to painting with. Keep the paint thin, and eventually it will look great.
5000 pts of WoC, 5000 pts of Orcs and now 3000 pts of Ogres...What was I thinking ????
Thought as much. How thin should each layer be roughly?
I'v found that adding a small amount of water to thin the White on a mixing palete helps, then basicaly use it as a wash. It will take a fair few coats via this method though. The first coat will look extremely thin depending on the undercoat (preferably skull white spray), but it will build up
Hive Fleet Penance - 3500 Points - 4/1/0
Waaaaaaagh Skagtrot (40k Orks) - In Progress
Dinhar Whitestar's Dragon Host (H.E) - 2000 Points
I've heard other painters say you want a consistency somewhat like milk, maybe a little thicker.
But even over grey white can be a pain - it can take a half a dozen coats or more to make it look decent, and usually by that point I end up frustrated and out of patience and just whacking on a thick coat so then it looks crummy anyway... Hope you have a bit more luck than I!
Alright thanks for all the help guys, While I am a patient person my army has a little over 70 guardsmen in it so we'll see how I do.
if you really want to cheat.....now this is an awesome tip for painting masses of white cloth I found recently, after having spent ours upon hours painting white templar tabards I brought some Vallejo pale grey wash. pretty much base coat white put a nice wash of the pale grey wash on it, hey presto instant shaded white. If you look down at Mr Hyde in my thread here I did that on him with a minor highlight touch ups after the wash

I am the Hammer...
Or I could water down Fortress grey to the consistancy of a wash and apply to the given areas.
EDIT: Sorry for double post internet hiccuped.
