I've been wanting to create a good jungle terrain board, but don't know where to start. Actually, the first place I need to start is with the board itself. Can anyone give me suggestions for the best board size to play up to 1,500 pt battles on? I was thinking 4x8 would be the biggest I would ever need. What type of board/wood/thickness should I need and how much would this cost? Storage isn't really a problem, although I was thinking of cutting it into two 4x4 pieces for ease of transportation. Anyone who can help me?
Well for a base, my friend always use pink-styrofoam stuff, because you can do so much stuff with it. You can get at Home Depot in 4x8 really cheap, and it's about 4-3 inches thick.

Thats not the kind of styrofoam that peels off, like packing styrofoam right?
I think he's talking about this hard foam stuff. Its pretty sweet, you can carve it and draw terrain on it. Heres a pic, which also happens to have a picture of GuardianGnome
Also, I'd say cutting it into 2 pieces is a good idea (2x 4x4s). That way you could have 2 small games going on or 1 big one.
Good luck (Y)

Hahah, I clicked that link without really reading the post and I was like "wow! my really crappy webpage!?"
That was just a quick job we did to make up a board while I was someplace far away on vacation and wanted to play with some friends who had just started 40k.
I made a really nice city fight board base made from really hard insulation "foam" Its not really foam its pretty solid. Comes in 4x8 sheets that are about an inch and a half thick. Looks like a really big door, only its super light weight.
I bought it at Home Depot for $25 and then covered it with a healthy coat of watered down Elmer's glue and sprinkled a bunch of sand all over the top ($5 for 50 pounds of sand!. Then all that was left was to spray paint it black, and Home Depot had black primer in spray cans for 99 cents a can!
Home Depot (and I would imagine most giant hardware stores) can mix you a quart of just about any color paint you can imagine for around $8 if you ever need to cover a lot of surface area cheaply. Make sure you get flat and not gloss, and make sure you get acrylic based.

id suggest basing the foamboard on plywood though. This will keep any accidental breakage of the foam to a minimum. Liquid nails or hot glue it to the plywood and make a 2x4 frame to support it. Cross brace the frame for added support and structual stregnth. Some hardware stores sell fold up legs for furniture. You could attach those to the plywood or 2x4 frame.
I have a 4x6 table and generally use it as follows:Originally posted by Deathz@Sep 28 2004, 17:29
Can anyone give me suggestions for the best board size to play up to 1,500 pt battles on?
4x3 - 500 pts
4x4 - 750 pts
4x5 - 1000 pts
4x6 - 1500+
Depending on the mission type and the amount of terrain we use there can be some cross over, but generally the 500 pt armies don't go over 4x4 and the 1500+ armies don't play under 4x5.
Have a look at the war board construction from war-zone.com, basically hard styro with taped joints that fold. You need an existing table to lay it out on though.
