Alright... So, I have a couple of armies that are in mixed stages of assembly and painting, and was hoping I could get some advice on paint brands to use other than Citadel. While their paints seem alright to me because they're all I've had available so far... they're just too bloody expensive. Scab Red, for example, works out to about $9.12 an ounce. So, I was wondering if anyone has used Golden or Daniel Smith paints or anything like them? Unfortunately, it needs to be something I can readily find at an art supplies store here in the US.
Try Valejo, P3 or Coates D'Armes paints.
You get more in each pot than GW and they are cheaper.

Yup. I use a mix of brands. You actually can't beat GW for their foundations and washes though.Originally Posted by Mad Cat

I will say it again.. And call me biased if you want...
REAPER PAINTS... Yes they make more than just miniatures. They have the same bottle type as Valejo to help reduce paint waste, cover better than GW paints IMHO, and are cheaper.
Also they have the triad colors... Colors specifically made to compliment each other in a given color type for better blending.
Only problem I have with Reaper Paints is that the eyedropper tip sometimes clogs, and is hard to unclog... Thankfully the tip can be removed and you can run hot water through it.. (Make sure to cap the tip-less bottle while doing this as spilled paint sucks)
I have tried vallejo and I like it more than GW when I am painting single figures that don't have to be part of an army. This is because I love mixing vallejo paints but mixing can sometimes be hard in an army when you have to consistantly mix paints. As for the expense, sometimes you just have to deal with it. This is an expensive hobby and sometimes you just need to remember the fun of gaming and painting when you buy the paints.
I've tried some reaper paints as well and had good results so far. They're not THAT MUCH cheaper, mind...
can't say i've ever used reaper paints as i would'nt know where to buy em, vallejo make fantastic metallics though so if you feel like giving them a try i'd expand your current palette with paints that are nothing like what GW produce before you try replacing colours with a cheaper brand.
