Ask anyone in the Loughborough GW and they will tell you I've not shut up about the Grey Knights release since they took the DH Codex from the shop floors. Now with only a mere 5 weeks until out shiny new models are released I'm trying to come up with some schemes to paint some of their details.
First of all, bases. All my 40k bases seem to be Codex Grey with green static grass stuck to them and I want something new for a new army, I've been playing around with paints and come up with these two so far:
Mordian Blue > Badhab Black wash > Drybrushed Ultramarines Blue > Dry brushed Bleached Bone
Mechrite Red > Badhab Black wash > Drybrused Blood Red > Drybrushed Bubonic Brown
I also want to come up with a new effect for my force weapons, my old style was to blend boltgun metal through to blue and up to white, but I don't fancy doing this for a whole new army as doing it for one model was hard enough!
I've tried doing a swirly looking effect on a spare power axe I has lying around, which has turned out well enough, but it seems it only works best on large surfaces and you don't get the same effect when using it on sword which are slightly narrower.
I want to try and stay away from the old lightening effect for the FWs as I imagine they're best save for PWs. Though I do like how the librarian dread force weapon has been painted in this months White Dwarf (pg7)
If anyone could recommend any colour schemes I could try out for bases, or had any idea how HM get the effect on that FW (or have any other ideas I could try) I'd greatly appreciate it

I am the Hammer...
definitely not a fan of the blue bases... They just don't seem even remotely natural, even in the sci-fi scope of things.
I like the effect on the Force Axe. I think it would be possible to do the same on the sword as well, if you went down the length of the blade, and let the swirls slip past parts of the blade. Like small voids.
you cold try an deamon world for the bases ash with random pools of blood or lava ect

The blue bases would be okay if you toned them down a bit. Make them more blue-grey and they'll be fine. I don't think the red ones complement grey knights that well.
