So for the last couple of months i've been searching pretty much everywhere for advice or forum topics discussing how people paint their DE vehicles. My kabal theme is basicly black armor with turqoius highlights, and so I'm debating on spray priming my vehicles grey and painting black, or spray priming with black and just doing minor touch ups. For my infantry models i've been painting i've been just spray priming grey and painting black, but with 2 ravagers, 3 raiders, and a razorwing jet fighter it seems like it would be really time consuming and use up a lot of paint. My only wory is that just doing the black primer will make the model look kinda meh (I aim for slightly better than table top quility, even though most my stuff falls short =/). Surprisingly i've never onced found some one who show cases their DE vehicles that have black themes and mention how they paint them (well one said they based in black, but i've noticed that some people refer to priming and basing as the same thing), even when theres like 20 posts folowing asking for advice/tuturiols.
Sooooo.... (post rant deep breathe) I was wondering what peoples ideas were out there. Is priming in black and doing touch ups perfectly fine (as long as im not going for a golden demon ;D lol), or is it really worth it to painting everything black. If it is fine with just priming, then any sugestions on primer? I currently have krylon black primer, but if anyone one knows of another that works good as a primer and base coat that would be nice to know ;D.
I would recommend priming black, it may look a little more matte than when you paint it black by hand but you will not see any sign of brushstrokes
"It is the fate of the weak to die unknown, and the destiny of the strong to rule for eternity. Give me glory, or give me death!"
Aye, give 'm an undercoat of black for sure. If you want to paint straight on it, give them a second coat asa good base. or if the black tint is not 100% what you want after the black undercoat, mix your own and spray on using an airbrush.
To be honest I haven't seen any blended DE (that I can recall) since the DE re-launch. They all seem to be black undercoated and "extreme highlighted". Looks ok on the vehicles, but not the troops (in my mind!)
Just finished a similar DE commission. I primed the vehicles black. (Army Painter Primer.) Then, mixed 2:1 Water/Chaos Black, and evenly went back over everything. Produced a really nice effect for a basecoat.
Then, per client orders, I used Mechrite Red around the edges, and highlighted with Blood Red. Before the Blood Red dried, I drew it out (blended) it into the black, and it gave everything a really, really awesome effect.
(^^ May be worth considering for your highlights!)
Hope this helps!
thanks for advice. I went ahead and primed a raider. Doesn't look bad. I may consider the watery chaos black idea. As far as blending....ya I really suck at that. On my venoms i just went for a single edge highlight of hawk turquiose. It might not look stunning, but its alright and gets the job done i guess. on the raiders since there a bit bigger maybe i'll try a thicker hawk turuiose edge with maybe something a tad brighter highlighted over it
I'm really interested in your scheme. Sounds awesome. I have an extra Raider in my closet, I may just try it out and see if it looks good, that way I can help advise you further.
As for blending, it's not hard; especially on a black undercoat. But stick with what you're comfortable with.
And the watery chaos black gives it that nice almost glossy finish, that leaving it the matte black of primer just doesn't.
Anyway, best of luck man!
Basicly I'm doing the codex version of Poisoned Tongue though technically i'm doing sky serpents. my highlights are thicker then what the heavy metal team does, but thats a combinaton of me liking them that way and not being good enough to do nice thin ones. For my kabalite wariors instead of doing those thin highlights around the eyes with glowy effects, i prety much made them look like they're wearing a turqouis mask over their helm (makes me think like a 3rd edition incubi head was superimposed over their helms) and red eyes. But ya i like the effect i got on my venoms. Real busy with some other stuff so might be a bit before i start painting the raiders. The way I see it there are so many panels and sides to edge highlight that just a single highlight can look good enough so its what i'm gona go for.
So finaly got around to going over my raider (primed black) with the 2:1 water to black. Did absolute wonders. definately brought it up from that 'meh' primed looked without the paint streaks (well, one spot had a tiny little streak...maybe too much water, was at the last dregs of my pallete). i'll definalyte be doing this for the rest of my vehicles
