Im thinking of turning some old metal dryads into treekin using green stuff to make large branches attached to each dryads back and shoulders. Thoughts?
Hmm, sounds like a real challenge for you since the old dryads are about the same size as the current.
If you put enough green stuff over the legs, arms to make big branches i think you idea would work but mayby use some copper wire or paper clips to feet and arms then modal green stuff on top.
Also would you want to keep the head the same size?.
Im thinking about adding some additional appendages/branches coming from the back extending up and over, and some small root-like things on the feet. I'm afraid it might come off a bit "Doc Ock" and perhaps a little short. I'm trying to come up with a plan to just make additions to the models and not have to do any cutting. I also want to make to old models less 2-dimensional in their new treekin form. Thoughts?
I finally got my greenstuff, sculpting tools, and some extra bits (glade guard bows, leaves and roots). I'm planning on putting some external sprue under the feet to make longer trunk-legs, so instead of humanoid legs they'll have legs more similar to a dog's as far as the joint locations are concerned. I'll do a similar (although shorter) thing on the back to create a large branch forming along the spine and extending up-and-back from between the shoulders. I'll use the gg bits to make small branches.
I have some gg to finish painting and then a unit of wardancers to do before I start this conversion, but hope to get some pics up as soon as I start.
So here are some initial pictures.
First stage of the first attempt model:
With greenstuff: (I think having the sprue as armature is too thick. thoughts?
Next I'll use wire as a base to add extensions to the arms and a branch off the back (similar to current dryad models)

Well, I think I learned a lot about greenstuff just from that first experience. I used way too much on the legs and didnt have the appropriate support to keep the entire model standing upright. Here's how it turned out after I attached some branches.
So, with that first conversion out of the way, I completed a second one with more branches and a lot more detailing in the bark. The details aren't super visible in this photo, but I'm hoping they'll show up better once its painted. I also used toothpicks for the base structure for the legs instead of sprue.

For the next 4 treekin, I decided that I need to strip the old painting from the dryad models before doing any more work with greenstuff. So, I have those 4 models sitting in a bowl of simple green.
Thoughts on what I should do as far as branching pattern or detail work (knots, holes etc) on the remaining guys?

I'm thinking that for the next one I'm going to try to put more detail into the branches, meaning that I'd like to have more branch scars, broken limbs, knots and smaller secondary and tertiary branches. Does this seem like too much? Would more secondary and tertiary branching make the models better or messier and/or more inconsistent.
The last one looks much better.
If you apply the greenstuff to the armature in smaller amounts at a time it'll give you the time to fully texture it while it's workable.
Once you get the texturing figured out on each portion it will be easier to blend each new addition of greenstuff into the previous one with the texture.
Maybe cut a few of them at the waist and extend the torso with a bit more trunk.
Here's the third conversion. I'll probably go back and attempt to improve the first one after all six are completed. Taking Spittle's advice, I applied less greenstuff at a time, which had costs and benefits. Benefits: longer working time. Costs: longer working time, and it was more difficult to get applications to meld together. However, I think that I'll stick with the slower pace. I tried incorporating some branches more similar to the hands that the dryad was modeled with in hopes of pulling the conversion and original aspects of my treekin together. I realize that the image is a little blurry (with the light and the 3Dness of the model, it was difficult to get a good focus on it), apologies. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I'd particularly like feedback on if this is an improvement over the 2nd conversion and some thoughts on the whole 'hand' thing (would it be better to stick with branches instead of incorporating hands). Thanks.

Heres the fourth conversion and another picture of the third, since the previous two weren't great (this one isnt either though). I've noticed that the branching structure is becoming more complex as I become more comfortable with the conversion. Do you think having a mix of simple and complex will look good together, or should I go back and add a few small secondary and tertiary branches to the second and (to a lesser extent) third conversion? I'm also considering just abandoning the first conversion and grabbing one of the dryads I havent marked for conversion to convert and replace it.
