Seeing as everyone complains about the expensive hobby converting models to carry weapons such as plasma guns instead of buying the metal models.
So post all your money saving conversions here.
1) An easy way to get the most out of you IG Heavy weapon box is to use normal gaurdsmen to hold them as well. One instance is to cut out the flamer from the flamer arm and replace it with a Heavy bolter also using the legs that look as though the gaurdsmen is walking forwards. The strap can be connected to the Heavy bolter and the handle added to the top.
Now you have a Gaurdsmen that looks as though he is walking to a better firing point. You can also cut the bullet chain off of one of the ammo boxes and leave it hanging out of the Hvy bolter. This gives it the look that it has been fired.
To make the second member of the Heavy weapon crew use one of the arms holding a mortar shell and cut out the shell. Do this roughly or as neatly as you can. When stuck on this arm looks as though he is pointing.
Using the ammo box that you cut the bullet chain off of to add to your bolter use an arm to hold the box. Now you have a gaurdsmen pointing to the new vantage point to which your Heavy bolter toting Gaurdsmen is running.
2) Plasma Guns. This was in a previous post but I shall add it here (say if you posted it and you shall be given credit). Using another flamer cut off the hosing to the flamer but not the connection. Also cut off the bulky part at the front, the bit with all the holes, up to the part where the handle is attached.
Now get the front of a plasma pistol and attach it to the front. Now you have a plasma gun.
I will add a pic of this one later as it is hard to describe.
Well these are my two for the moment. Add more and we can save people some money.

When I say jump you don't ask me 'How high?' maggot! You jump!
My idea is similar to your 1st one about the heavy bolter. Instead you use noraml guardsmen to carry the missile launchers, either nick the squatting set of legs from the heavy weapons sprue or use a normal pair, either works fine. Attach the missile arms as usal and you have a man with a missile laucher.
For the loader i used the running pair of legs and the normal torso as usual. Then i attached the sergeant's laspistol arm with the laspistol pointing up. The other arm is the sergeants chainsword arm. cut off the chainsword, leaving the hand. Shave of his stripes on his arm. Then cut a handle from the tank sprue ( the ones for the hatches ) in half. Glue each half to either side of his clenched hand.
Now glue the three missiles together from the heavy weapon platoon box in a triangular shape / pyramid. Wrap a flat bit of green stuff around the center of he missiles. It's supposed to look like he's carrying the missiles in a sort of bag / cloth. Finally glue the missiles to the hand with the handles, the handles should glue onto the green stuff ( make sure the green stuff is wide enough for the hand plus the hanles to fit on first, add more green stuff if necessary ). Then glue the arm onto the body.
Some ones probably already done this, but i think it looks alright. I only did it yesterday.
My idea is similiar to your second. Take the flamer, skip the "fueltanks", file of all unnecessary pipes and wires. Resculpt the front into a rounder shape and tada(! a plastic meltagun! Could do the exact same thing to make a plasma gun..as you pointed out.
well since i happen to have a chunk of metal skaven thingies around that i have no intention of using as well as the first necron warriors which look stupid i think may hap i should melt them down and mold them into sonic blasters... I will fill you in in the process unless the mods get mad

my money (and style) is saved through the use of cactus spines, there the best for converting evil stuff.
Take my words with a grain of salt, i am not the tactical genius i think i am!
for my winged hive tyrant, i was given the dragon wings by a friend of mine who has all sorts of bits and peices, this saves me £10(£6 for wings, $4 for postage)! so ask friends who did collect and now don't, or have changed armys several times!
if you are reading this signature, then you are wasting you're time, and i am wasting my time by writing it, so run along now, jimmy, run along.
