Let me just start by saying that I am absolutely bored and don't actively play space marines. But I recently moved to the US and have to wait a couple months for my stuff to get to me from Japan...
I picked up the battle for Macragge set at a local game store, mainly for a cheap way to get my step-father into the game... well he got busy so no time for that right now so I decided to work on the space marines (die nids die).
When looking at the small micro rule book and cover of the box I noticed a lot of detail on space marines (Im used to version 1, so bear with me). The latin all over the shoulder guards and engraved on their weapons.
Lacking my proper tools and bored out of my mind I came up with a plan to make this latin engraving on the edge of the shoulder guards.
Taking a paper clip and unfolding one end, I took a worthless cheap (unused) nail clipper to the end of the paperclip and clipped off a piece of it. Now this damaged the nail clipper but it was a cheap extra in the house.
This created a flat but sharp end on the paper clip in order to engrave.
Looking up the proper latin (Yahoo search "English Latin" for an online dictionary), I went at it. It took me a long time but I have engraved all 10 shoulder pads all around the edges just like the space marines on the cover.
Using the local paint set from someone who wanted to see the result I painted it the normal Ultramarine colors of gold and blue(some say yellow but the cover was gold). After it dried, with a little bit of black ink I was able to make the engraving come out.
I found it to be a very nice detail for those who are bored like me or are fanatics. Nowadays when I look around all the covers of boxes all have space marines way more detailed then they are in the box...
After I finished the shoulder pads I got a commission to make a 10 man squad from my local warhammer shop with engraving and putty (for those extras that stick out, or the laurels... and raised insignia). Just thought to pass it on since I made $50 (the exact cost of the Macragge set is $45 locally) to do the 10 man squad (free units) for the shop.... for the cost of a paperclip.
How about some pictures of that?
yeah, we want pictures!
if you are reading this signature, then you are wasting you're time, and i am wasting my time by writing it, so run along now, jimmy, run along.
Working on it, my digital camera is still somewhere in the mail trying to get to me.

Note: Im working on my commission right now.... but hopefully when Im done I can have the store manager get me a pic for my work.
I also failed to mention that I engraved the undercoat, not the plastic model. I did cut into the plastic but only deep enough for a dry brush undercoat to leave the marks and then re-engraved it.
