Welcome to Librarium Online!
All right, I got the 4th edition starter set (with lizardmen and brettonians), and although I'm gonna keep the Lizardmen, nobody I know uses Brettonians. My brother-in-law, though, just started collecting Vampire counts. What I thought we could do is buy a set of zombies and use any spare bits to help convert the Brettonian archers into more zombies. I'd like to do something similar with the Knights of the Realm, turning them into Black Knights, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Any ideas about either project would be greatly appreciated.
Well, the obvious ways are to switch their heads for skulls and paint them black...
You could also get new shields for them, but stay away from the regular round undead ones, they don't look so good on knights IMO.
You could try the coffin-lid shields, but I don't know if they fit mounted models: Coffin Shields
Just switch a few arms and heads over and add wounds for the knights, they shouldn't be too hard. The theme of the unit could be Bretonnia so it doesn't matter if they still resemble knights, thats what is cool about VC, there are so many opportunities for conversion!
I'm not too sure about the bowmen though, they have pretty boring shapes... It would reqire a bit of work cutting them up I think, could work though.
1: Take a paperclip, pull it straight (some of it) and scratch at the armor of the units. Make it look like the armor, shields.. etc look very worn and damages... a Nail file can work to wear down edges.
2: When painting the armor, paint it dull in color, and around the wears, tears, and rendering you have done to the model paint it with an undercoat of the color you pretend it used to be, and then dry brush it with rust color.
3: For the horses, use the paperclip and file and go to town on the body of the horse and any of the armor and cloth attachments on it... then when you are done, paint the horse in pale colors and all the cuts and damage as though the animal flesh is rotting or has been cut and damages...
4: Cut weapons in half and glue on the horses or say have a spear cut in half going through a knight (one half of the spear put on his front and back)... for full effect.
Great ideas =] This is why I, a total WH newbie, decided to ask for help before doing these things. Keep 'em coming ;]
I love Librarium Online!
Stick a half of an arrow going into some of them, that's always great for laughs. And take a drill bit and drill holes in them as if they've been hit by allot of projectiles that were removed and later started to eat at their armour.

My personal favourite is an arrow through the eye
Think of how they died before beeing raised to serve in the afterlife. Come up with a few battlefield deaths, and make it look like it on the models. Even better on the zombies, you can think of everyday deaths, accidents, farming dangers etc. Even the comican can be used on zombies, cause that's what they are, comicly useless
If you are talking about the 5th edition bretonnians (I think you are, cause that starter set had brets and lizards) then using the bowmen as zombies would be a bad idea. The only part usable would be their heads, attach those to zombies. I got like 70 5th ed bretonnian bowmen, dunno what to do with them either
Hey.. I might save money and make a VC army out of my old bretonnians. Thanks for the tip
Some people have probably seen these, but they may give you a few ideas. My undead converted and combined with Dark Elves:
Look closely for interesting wounds and damage I have added to some of them.
Those are pretty cool conversions, although I didn't spot too many wounds on those pics, a bit hard to see.
