Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm trying to take my abilities to the next level on my necrons. I am new to modeling, and thought I did a pretty good job for my first army, but now I want to make it nicer (like the space marines at my local gw shop).
I am struggling to find out what detail to paint.. Is it me, or is there just nothing to detail on the necrons? I just black primer'd, tin bitz drybrush, and paint the skull white, dot the eyes green, gun black (green drybrush in the power area) with boltgun on the edges (still trying to get the hang of painting edges), scorpion green on the chest emblem.
Is there anything I'm missing, or are necrons just boring as far as paint goes?
I was thinking about getting the edges of the model (drybrushed with tin bitz) with brazen brass....? Maybe a really dark wash..?
I just stripped a model last night in brake fluid, so I want to try one from scratch and see if I can do a much nicer job than my first paint jobs (which I'm sure I can do with a little over 3000 points in painting experience now).
Thanks for any advice.

Well you can always add stuff to your models. Making soem kind of scarab shield for your necron and a small sword as CC wpn should be fun to c. Altough tat is more converting then painting I guess. The necrons are kept simple imho it is just a skeleton body with a gun nothing more nothing less. (This is not meant to offend any necron player I apoligise if this may seem so). Otherwise decorate the base or use some inkts highlights should be somethign to paint extra on the necrons .
However with that statement out of the way, I would say listen to ArchonBjorn. He has a really good tendency to not say stupid things and give bad advice.Learn from yesterday.

I guy at my shop whose necrons had a thick purple line around the shouler pad with a could trim. Little things like this can really set it off and make it look different. You could do something like this only with like a different color for each squad. Just depends on what your looking for.
I think that it's just that Necrons simply don't have anything that can really be detailed.
Look on Chaos models, they offer a LOT of opportunities...
Necrons seem kind of Egyptian in nature, so why not work with that?
Paint them a gold and a sort of metallic blue colour. Do the ribs like that, alternate. Head in gold, maybe. Limbs in gold. The centre chest part in blue with a gold symbol.
For the shoulder guards you could try something fancy. Maybe silver.
Heck, why not model up robes or something from Green Stuff... like some sort of elite guards a Pharoah would have.
If you don't know what you want you end up with a lot of stuff you don't.
The spines, elbows, shoulders and knees are a good starting point for a two-tone metallic colour scheme.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
