Just like acrylic model paints, solvent based paints (oil) have good brands and not so good brands. If the Testors you're using are the kind in the little square glass bottles, they are very thick. You need to thin them, just like acrylics, to make them easier to use. It's very hard to paint details with a thick glob of paint on your brush. Only in this case you need to use spirits, thinner or turpentine instead of water or acrylic thinners.
Concentrate on putting less paint on your brush, make sure the paint is thinned so it flows well, and use a fine pointed brush. Watch out for the thinned paint as it will flow much easier than the paint straight from the bottle.
The Testors Model Master line is better, but they also need thinning.
Many people will slam solvent based paints claiming they are not as good, but most of them just haven't learned to use them and of course they can't paint as well with them as with the acrylics they are used to.
In my opinion, solvent based paints are better in every respect compared to acrylics of a similar quality except for the inconvenience of needing to use turps to thin and clean. Other than that they are excellent paints and are easier to find in many more colors than acrylics.
If anyone doubts them, just browse an issue of Fine Scale Modeler or similar magazine.
i personally dont use the oil based simply because the solvent to get it off the brush is expensive. as for details, im not exactly sure what to do.
