I am concentrating on a white colour scheme for my new Tau army, but I want it to be the gloss and shiny look. I have found that GW white is a bit too grainy, even when heavily diluted and varnished with a gloss varnish.
I have no experience with vallejo paints. How good is their white? Also, do they work with GW paints? The reason I asked is because I regularly use WN oils for washes and drybrushing, butI have found that sometimes they tend to make a mess of GW paints (ie. lift the whole thing off the model, exposing the plastic/metal underneath). Their dilutants are probably incompatible.
So, is the vallejo white smooth? And is it recommended?
I dunno, never used them. But I have found a British retailer for their paints (I notice you live in London)
They also do the old GW stuff (IIRC) called Coat d' Arms
I have not had problems with the vallejo white family when properly thinned. Vallejo model paints tend to be fairly thick and definitely need to be thinned. Another thing you could use is windsor and newton white ink. It isn't quite as vibrant as the straight white but it is really thin (its ink after all! )
Another thing you could try to prevent the GW paint from peeling up is to seal the paint layers with a matte varnish.

i finally solved my white problems by doing a heavy overbrush of a light grey first, then a coat or two of very thin Vallejo white. will pretty much cover anything without getting grainy
just have to be patient!
i just bought vallejo's glossy white, that can't look grany.
Take my words with a grain of salt, i am not the tactical genius i think i am!
