I walked into GW southend and i saw this scenery behind the counter. it just jumped up and said buy me. Knowing me i was ten pounds short :o !

I decided to make my own. It is a big ruined building, with a few barrels and stuff in the middle. I keep walking into GW now, and just looking around, standing by the counter and looking at in great detail.

For the walls, it's simple, just ruined walls on a base. Any ideas for the middle of it? what to place inside? I have used copper couplings (or something) with rings inside and a shield for barrels so far.

Fallen walls work, some aquarium pebbles or cat litter for rubble. Choped up foam core board and some bits of plastic sprue make good broken masonary.
Add some rubble a few fallen collums.

Everything Hakbash suggested would be perfect, the only suggestion I would add is that you get a squad of mini's and figure out where the paths through the rubble are going to be before you start glueing things on. Heres an example of ruins if you need some more inspiration.

these are all great, and i have allready put them into practise. Im gonna revise my question:

What things should I put inside the ruins? (eg second floors in some places, barrels, crates, a broken down tank etc.)

    Definantly a broken tank!

Consider using old electronic gear, take out the components... these will look pretty cool...

Not exactly electronic gear... but more as in the components.
If you rip open an old computer (be careful with monitors and powersupplies) there's bound to be some kind of big boulgy thing that looks pretty arcane to use as some 40k tech.

tried that in the weekend. Some idiot (putting it politely) decided to take out all the electronics before they dumped it!

Just have a better look, other stuff than computers can be used too.
Electromechanical stuff will work great too.
Stuff like microswitches, small engines and the like.
Just have a look around, sertain car parts can work fine too.
