Several topics have been posted concerning how to create some of the alternate Imperial Guard regiments illustrated in the Codex. Therefore I have decided to make this detailed guide on how to convert these regiments in the easiest (and most cost efficient) possible way.
Regiments listed are:
-Death Korps of Krieg
-Tanith First and Only
-Savlar Chem Dogs
-Armageddon Ork Hunters
-Elysian Drop Troops
-Joball Indentured Squadrons
-Noctan Strike Forces
The Death Korps of Krieg
Being a Krieg player myself, I have some experience with these guys. Now there are two ways to make these sinister guys.
1) The easiest way is to use Steel Legion minis. The only other thing you'll need is the Chaos Vehicle Accessory Sprue available from GW mail order. The little spikes are perfect for the helmets of your Death Korps lads. This is the easiest way to go (and the one I've used in my army).
2) The other way to go is to use Valhallan minis. This technique looks better if done well as it captures the long, heavy coats of the Death Korps. However, itis more demanding as you will need to make their heads and helmets from Green Stuff which is demanding unless you are very skilled.
Make sure you paint them in dark, sinister colours such as brown or grey, or even black and decorate them with skulls and bones to make them scary...
The Tanith First and Only
Now, there are a few Tanith minis out there already and they are pretty cool. If you want a Tanith army you might want to buy some of the Tanith minis to add to your army but overall, I would recommend using Catachan Jungle Fighters and certain Necromunda minis such as House Escher gangers. The Tanith have female troopers as well so with a little conversion they would be good.
Green Stuff is a must with Tanith troopers. They wear long cloaks and these will have to be made from Green Stuff. If you feel up to the challenge I say go for it. It might be quite a bit of work but if you don't feel like you hve what it takes to make a lot of Green Stuff cloaks maybe you shouldn't play Tanith..
Paint your Tanith army in grey or black uniforms. The cloaks should be camoflaged in green or brown.. or whatever colour you like really as they are woven in cameleoline...
The Harakoni Warhawks
The drop troops of Harakon also require the use of Green Stuff. For these guys, use Cadians as the base. For the carapace armour Green Stuff is the way to go. Cut small squares and put it where it needs to go. As for the grav chutes, Forge World have just released these and they can be ordered. You can also use backpacks from te Necromunda range.
Paint these guys in solid colours such as dark grey or green or even dark blue. Don't use much camouflage as they are elite drop troops.. and you don't want them to look like Cadians...
The Savlar Chem Dogs
As opposed to the regiments I've already covered, the Chem Dogs have real individuality potential. These guys are the scum of the universe and care nothing for the Imperial cause... All they care about is themselves. There is an article in Chapter Approved '03 on making these guys but I think it looks a bit expensive so here's my view on making them:
Use Catachans and Cadians, and Necromunda minis are also great... You an vary the three as you wish because the conversion work will make them look alike. You will need to get hold of a lot of cool-looking Chaos Terminator heads with the rebreathers. They are perfect for the Chem Dogs. For variety, Catachan heads can also be used.
To make the big 'rags' on their shoulders use bits of Green Stuff. These can vary in size and appearance and don't need to be straight. Make littel 'tears' and 'holes' in these.
Get hold of a bunch of different Necromunda backpacks for your Chem Dogs.
For the breating tubes, use green stuff, or even guitar strings!
Paint your Chem Dogs a gritty brown colour. The 'rags' on their shoulders should be a sickly yellow and they breathing tubes can be red or metallic.
The Terrax Guard
These guys are really just a bunch of Commissars but how would you make them?
I would use Mordian minis, as well as regular Commissar minis. As with the Tanith, you will need to mould cloaks from Green Stuff. You will also need to add a bit to the Mordian caps as they are too small and flat for the Commissar look. This should also be made from Green Stuff. If you wish, you can add some armour using Green Stuff.
Paint these guys black and red and paint the shoulder tassels yellow or gold.
The Kanak Skull-Takers
Now you would probably think that you simply should use Catachans here, right? Wrong! You will need Catachan bits for grenades, and other bits, including the odd bandana and a few torsos. What you will need is the WFB Chaos Marauder minis. These are a bunch of big brutes with crude weapons and the Kanak 'look'. To make laspistols, make the handle and back part from green stuff and add the tip of a lasgun (you'll have lots in spare as the Skull-Takers use the Warrior Weapons doctrine).
Use dirt colours for the uniforms of these guys. Their warpaint is really up to you, but bright colours such as red or blue are best.
The Armageddon Ork Hunters
These guys are not difficult. Use the Catachan minis and lots of bits from the Ork Boyz sprues to decorate them. Paint their skin green and give them lots of orky markings. Tattoos and piercings with ork teeth and horns and stuff are also a great idea.
(Good doctrines: Hardened Fighters, Xeno-Fighters: Orks, Veterans, Light Infantry)
The Asgardian Rangers
These primitive guardsmen can be made using the Necromunda Ratskins minis and Catachan Jungle Fighters converted using Space Wolf bits. Rough Riders made from converted Kislev Horse Archers can be used. Convert their horses to look like they have been bionically enhanced. Green stuff can be used to make skins and furs for the troops and officers. Paint these guys in flat greens and browns and decorate them with skulls, horns and bones to give them a primitive feel.
(Good doctrines: Rough Rider Squadrons, Cyber-implants, Die Hards, Priests, Ratling snipers)
The Elysian Drop Troops
Get hold of a bunch of Space Marine Scouts with shotguns and give them helmets made from Green Stuff. Make the armour padding from green stuff. For your basic infantry platoons, use the same technique but convert their shotguns into lasguns. (Alternatively, you could buy the new Elysian Drop Troops from Forge World.) With some armour padding made from Green Stuff the old Storm Troopers can also be used.
Paint these guys Shadow Grey with chunky camouflage.
(Good doctrines: Drop Troops, Veterans, Storm Trooper Squads, Hardened Fighters, Carapace Armour)
The Jopall Indentured Squadrons
These guys can be made using the old Cadian minis. There isn't much conversion work here. They can be used as they are.
Paint them green with light grey or white helmets and armour.
(Good doctrines: Conscript Platoons, Special Weapon Squads, Sharpshooters, Heavy Weapon Platoons, Ratling snipers
The Noctan Strike Forces
Use Cadians for these guys. Get rid of the shoulder plates and fix the arm with Green Stuff. 'Fatten up' the trouseres a bit with Green stuff. Use Necromunda Heavy backpacks for their equipment packs and make the breathing tubes from Green Stuff.
Paint them dark colours such as grey, black or dark blue. Paint their skin in dark tones.
(Good doctrines: Special Weapon Squads, Veterans, Die Hards, Storm Trooper Squads, Conscript Platoons)
The Pyran Dragoons
These exellent looking guardsmen will require a bit of conversion. I would use the High Elf Phoenix Guard minis along with Cadian arms and weapons. For the Rough Riders, saw a Phoenix Guard mini in half and use the High Elf Eryllian Reaver legs. Use standard Rough Rider horses rather than the Elven steeds. If you like, you can make cloaks from Green Stuff.
Paint them in regal colours such as blue, black and red and paint their helmets and armour gold. Lots of banners and flags are also a great idea for the Pyran Dragoons.
(Good Doctrines: Rough Rider Squadrons, Iron Discipline, Close Order Drill, Die Hards, Priests)
The Semtexian Bombardiers
For this grim-looking regiment use Empire Militia and Brettonian Men-at-arms minis with Cadian arms and weapons. Be sure to get rid of the Cadian shoulder plates and make sure that the head of your mini has a simple helmet. Use the spikes from the Chaos Vehicle sprue for the points on the helmets. Mordheim heads and bits are also good to create versatility.
Paint these guys in metallic colours and paint their uniforms dark grey or brown.
(Good doctrines: Mechanised, Tech Priest Engineseers, Special Weapon Squads, Iron Discipline, Veterans)
Hope this helps.. If there are any requests, questions or comments just ask...
Not a bad summary. For the Skull-takers you could use the Necromunda pistol sprue if you want some variation on the weapons as well as less conversion work :)
Wootage for BobaHat.....whatever that means
Hive Fleet Furi Kuri 32/21/4

yes... w00tage indeed!!
i was always thinking about how to convert terrax guard and i thought... add some capes and hats to the cadians... then add some extra armour for carapace.
wait, looking at my codex i see that most of the terrax armour is hidden by the cloak
edit- why do tanith have priests? (i have read first book)
