Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey.. I've searched all over town for Testor's Dullcoat, which is what seems to be recommended around here, from reading threads (A lot say Krylon Crystal Clear and then Testor's Dullcoat). I found the Krylon's, but I can't find any place that sells the Testor's.
Is the Purity Seal from Citadel really THAT bad?.. I'm not sure what to use now.
I think one is probably just as good as the other. Problem with Citadel stuff in general is that they're overpriced compared to other brands (Krylon or Testors.) Personally, I use Krylon because it's good, relatively cheap, and most stores (hobby or hardware) carry it. I haven't used Testors Dullcote yet but many people swear by it and Testors has a good rep for quality products. I hear Dullcote also has a mega-matte finish.
I hear voices...and they don't like you!
I pick my testors Dullcote at a local Model railroad shop. I am sure anyplace that sells model trains, cars, etc. should carry it. Outside of the states I am not sure where you can get it.
I believe the big difference between purity seal and dullcoat is purity seal would be more compared to the krylon crystal clear - meaning it is more of a semi-gloss/satin finish while the dullcote is dead flat.
If you use purity seal I would spray it with dullcote afterwards - given you can find it!
I wouldn't use Purity Seal if it was free and delivered to my front door in a limousine. It's overpriced, prone to frosting if sprayed wrong, and if it gets too heavy in the recessess it dries cloudy white.
I use Krylon for intermediate coats (after a base coat but before details) or when I want an extra thick finish coat for more protection. I'll do two light coats of Krylon then a coat of Testors. This is just to save my Testors as I have to drive a 100 miles one way to the nearest store to carry it. (Hobby Lobby and/or Michaels)
I always finish with Testors for the perfect matt finish. The great thing about testors is its impossible to mess up. You can spray it light, in the cold, heat, humidity, or so heavy it drips and it still dries to a clear matt finish. Any gloss items are hand painted with gloss varnish at the very end.
I would recommend Krylon over Citedel. Cheaper, and it actually works better. Still not a true matte like Dullcoat, but it will do in a pinch. To find Dullcoat, check out hobby stores. Non-GW stores that sell models, terrain, hobby supplies, these will carry it. Depending on your city size, you should have a few in your city(I know in Portland, OR, there are over 5 within a 1/2 hr of me). Craft Stores such as Micheals, or the equivilent will also carry Dullcoat.
While I am not disputing the quality of Dullcote (I use it all the time myself! I have to disagree about it always drying clear no matter the condition. I have found that on occasion if it is cold or if it is applied to thick it will whiten in the recesses. It hasn't happened often and I am sure it occured when not properly used. That said I highly recommend it as stated above!Originally posted by WolfRaider@Feb 7 2005, 18:57

OK when GW rebadgd Purity seal about 12-18 months ago, the new product they used was appaling, it went milkey al lthe time, this was branded as: PURITY SEAL - MATT VARNISH, however, due to complaints from customers and store staff (I know at least one GW store where they stopped selling it without approval from head office), they found a new product about 6 months ago. This is much better, it is branded as PURITY SEAL - SATIN VARNISH. It may not be the best on he market, but the bad press for purity seal was with the matt stuff not the satin stuff
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Ever since a squad of marines I sprayed with Purity Seal went frosty, I've hand varnished all my models, it lets me have much better controll over whats happening.
