slat is the best thing to use for that efefct. go to any beech with large, slate cliffs and yank off a chunk, thank god i live next to about 7 differant beeches, half of which have big, slate cliffs. god bless south west england!

the first is a real rock, the second is bark. if you are going to use bark though i'd ensure that it has dried out first if it hasn't sticking it next to your boiler and this will generate enough slow heat for a gradual drying out and helps to prevent warping.
