Does anyone have any tips on painting vehicles? I've sprayed my rhino black but when I go to add any colour to it, it's very blotchy. I suspect I'm adding too much water to my paints. Metallics go on fine but non-metallics look dreadful.
Basically, you're going the right way about it.
You need to use multiple thin coats of paint. Thick paint will result in brush lines and loss of fine detail.
Just paint them over a couple of times more with the same colour and they'll come good.
You could also try adding an 'in-between' shade. For example, if you're painting Space Wolf Grey over black, try painting the model with a darker (eg 'codex' grey first

Painting with a darker shade of the color first helps a lot. Also, let your paints be thin. How I test if it's too thin or not is like this: I use a plastic palette, so i put a little paint on the side of the wells. If the paint area shrinks, then it's too thin. If it doesn't shrink and flows a bit, then it's just right. Also, drybrushing might help for vehicles. Gives a nice damaged look, and paint can easily go over black, I believe.
I applied another coat this evening (my 9th) and added less water this time. It's covered much better. There were a few things about the model I wasn't too happy with but I resisted the urge to go back over things and just pushed on.
I've had a pretty good night and it's really starting to come together now. Just a few final details to do now and it's complete. Not perfect but I've learned in doing. I'll post a pic when it's done.
