We need a little bit more than that to be useful. Like... is it for 40k, fantasy, or both? what kind of theme do you want for this board? how much money do you have to spend on it? Try getting a bit more specific, then you might get some useful advice.

isn't it obvious Hes army is Space Marines.

I'm using a board suited for 40k and fantasy.

    give you a few ideas

    Desert cheapest
    jungle not as cheap
    Forest quite expensive
Ruin city cost a fair amount
Grass lands cost a fair bit
Plains cost a fair amount too
    Artic quite cheap
    Barrens really expenive

you can even combine thing together

Like me im using a forrest with snow on the trees and ground
snow is easy and its pretty cheap. use soduim bi-crabonate mix with Pva glue and you will have a snow effect

If youre creating this table to fight against your friends you should make it so thatyou make the table to your advantage It's cheap but really fun. It be fun to see a space marine army get into cc with tau without getting one Sm dead or hit . I wont be able to picture the face of that tau player  .

I am a tau player and i want you to get into combat with me you charge me i let you win get my units about 14 inches away. You win combat i die i rapid fire you with kroot, Fw, crisis suits, and shoot you down with stealths burst cannons, ion cannons from hammer head and ill markerlight you with my pathfinders than i use drone to kill you. That what i do to 1 single unit of marines if they dont die from the first round of fire from the kroot and fw.

Ne way if you want an board that helps your marines like get close make sure it works both ways like if you give 1 side cover give the other side cover too, because say if you fialed your board edge roll and they will chose the good side which leaves you open so make both sides even

I highly recommend the book "how to make wargames terrain." It gives you a shed load of ideas with really good photos diagrams, hints and tips etc. Its a must for any budding board builder.

im actually building a table myself, just get 2 4x4 sheets of plywood, you can make 2 scenes very easily, first for anytype of grass field, get a heavy duty stapler and some green felt, this is just a standard green tabletop, for the second sheet, buy a can of stone fleck spray.it will make anything look like gravel/stone, and have a slight gritty texture. or you could just use the back of the same sheet of plywood.

think about using modular terrain boards this means that you can have 4 2'x2' boards with rivers, roads, hills, etc on them and be able to change the terrain from being one favoured by 40k to a fantays one fairly simply, jsut by rotating the pieces of the board or by replacing them with other terrain boards
