What army would be good for converting to pirates. It can be either 40k or WFB, I just want pirates. I was thinking of doing a BFG and 40k tie together with some sort of renagade faction of something acting as pirates. If it's WHF then I can create a fleet and use models on land and at sea.
Here are my thoughts on armies:
The tanks and infantry would look cool with pirate paintings and pirate conversions. It would work that a brigade of IG decided it was time to stop acting as meat sheilds and start profitiering. Seems like to many models to have in a pirate force, even with a tie in with BFG. BFG tactics are a little on the weak side. They are more ships of the line than fast pirate ships.
Been there, done that. Not gonna happen.
Not normal SMs. Wouldn't ever work fluff wise. You could create a unique chapter and make them a heretical chapter. Not Chaos but tired with the Emporers BS. The paint job would be cool and converting would be awsome but I doubt I would do it for 2 reasons.
Way to many SM chapters out there.
Not that many conversions you could do to make normal marines look piraty.
They have to much of a purpose. They belive in Chaos and are trying to destroy the Imperium.
A computer with a bad attitude is still a computer.
Possibly. Tactics are sound and they use many no conventional technologies. The conversions on the vehicles would be small and numerous plus the ability to do any paint scheme definitly makes it interesting. They are intelligent enough and they have enough guile to make them sly pirates. Their numbers are low enough to constitute a pirate force. BFG tactics are also good with the whole solar sail rig.
I don't like them all that much. Just something personal. They would look ok or even cool as pirates but I just don't find them that attractive.
DH or WH
Not smart enough to pull it off.
Don't know to much about this really. I was thinking Dark Elves as I have their army book and I like the way they look. They just need to be able to look like pirates searching for some booty. Tactics requiering speed and guile over armor and sheer numbers would be a plus. Good on the ocean would be a great addition.
The reason I put this here is because I'm not choosing an army to play. I'm choosing an army to convert and I'm look for some good ideas for conversions so I can choose 1 army.

Necrons.. arent computers but we know what you mean, Dark eldar actually well you may not like them but they are the only ones that fit the pirate thing. They have ships for heavy support and transports, and look like they would fit it... But if you really just cant stand them at all, eldar might work. I mean they wouldnt be the perfect army in the world ever possible but if you can pull it off it would be pretty cool.

I actually have a slug living in YOU, right now...
Slowly will start playing: Iyanden, and Chaos.
well.... if you want pirates....
It's DE and DE for you, mah frenn, fluff and tactic wise these two are up your alley.
It's understandable to dislike DEldar models... I dislike DE as well (mainly because they're played by good players and own all comers.)
A man's at odds to know his mind, for his mind is aught he has to know it with.
Orks can pull it off. A battle wagon is just a galleon on wheels. Hanging off the rigging whilst waving crude cutlass/choppas or sluggas is just their thing.
Eldar Exodites are pirates. They are an old subrace from the 2nd edition 40K rules but with the right conversions any eldar or dark eldar force can look piraty. Take a look in the Kill Team section of the 40K rulebook and there is a squad of converted eldar pirates.Originally posted by CBrate@Mar 18 2005, 08:18

 never mind this post
An ex staff member at GW Edinburgh made a pirate army using catchan and empire free company parts , that looked really nice , but he used DE rules. Im currently starting a pirate army myself using DE rules but I hate most of the DE figures , Incubi excepted. As mentioned the eldar killteam in the rule book look awesome and are pretty pirate like but Id like something a little diferent. Id still like it to be Eldarish and use bits from the guardian set and the DE set (although theres not much in the de set Id use other than some torsos). Im in no rush though and Im kinda pinning my hopes on some cool Wood elf stuff to supliment current 40k eldar (and DE ) figures. Orks too though fit well as a pirate force , I just dont like the look of them but like the aforementioned staff member theres nothing stopping anyone using ork rules and diferent models.
