I am just curious to know how many of you fellow gamers would be willing to pay someone to paint your models, or have already done so. Or would you be willing to buy figs on ebay that had been painted and not repaint them yourself? Personally i prefer to paint my own models for that personal touch. Although I must admit I wouldnt mind having someone basecoat my 400 night goblins for me! Would your fellow gamers frown upon you if you didnt paint your own figures?
If games workshop had pre-painted models, i would be happy.
Although they would need to have some sort of varnish over them.

Peronally, no I wouldn't, although I can understand why many people might wish to pay to have their figures painted, especially as in many cases those unpainted figures gradually increase in number.
I can also see why a person who considers themselves a less than average painter might wish it done too.
I'd rather paint them myself purely because it is, as you said, more personal. Given a choice between an army I'd painted rather averagely or an army painted for me better than I could do it, I'd rather have my own.
I've seen many armies/figures thatt could be considered poorly painted, but my admiration always lies with the person who tries, even if it is not as good as it could be.
As for buying figures off ebay etc and not repainting them, I have done this. I have purchased a whole mass of figures off that site over the past 6 months or so and have repainted most of them. However, there are a few that have matched my paint scheme similarly enough that I have left them as they are. Recently I've been buying bikes and Land Speeders, a lot of bikes and Land Speeders, to finish my Ravenwing army and let's face it, if I buy a Bike already painted in the black livery of Ravenwing what's the point in redoing it
Best of luck to those that have their figures painted for them though, not everyone has the time or skills to complete the task. Anyway, it also offers something to do for those painters with idle hands.
I don't think many gamers would frown on this activity and if they did, it's a pretty narrow minded outlook. Probably a few of those minority who consider themselves painting gods would have something to say, but then they're usually a bunch of arrogant know-it-alls anyway. There are those who feel nothing is as good as their stuff and there are others, like wolfraider and undeadair who are humble about their abilities and share their skills openly.

i personally wouldent have my minis painted by otehr people, becuase for me the reason i buy them as kits si so i can assemble and paint them myself, and while my painting skills are nothing special, they will improove as i paint more stuff.
that said, i can understand why people do it.
I have previously bought models second hand from a few different people. All of them seemed to think that the fact the models were already painted was a bonus to me. I would agree with the previous posts that I would rather paint my own, so the fact that the models were already (very poorly) painted was a pain because I had to strip them. Even if they had been well painted I would rather have them painted by myself.
For me, painting is as big a part of the hobby as gaming, modelling, etc. I have much more respect for someone who has had a go at painting their own models than someone with immaculate models that they paid someone to paint.
Try it yourselves - just my 10 pence worth!
Yeah, I've bought some prepainted stuff off Ebay, and for me it's been worth it. I keep myself busy enough and those figs allowed me to fill some slots while I was working on other stuff. I envy people who paint well but still enjoy painting my own mediocre stuff. And if someone else wants to commission a whole army from someone, go for it. I guess it's all personal. Some like to play. Some to paint. Some both.
I wouldn't pay someone else to paint my models, they might make the ones I have already painted look bad :p I bought a chaos army recently and am currently painting it, I am not the worlds best painter by a long shot but at least I know that it is all my own handiwork and it all fits in with my colour scheme.
I have a friend who pays to get everything painted, mainly because he doesn't know which end of the brush to put the paint on :p He recently got an ogre kingdoms army and has not painted one model in a 3000 point army.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
at the moment, i am seriosely considering finding somebody to paint my many un-painted tyranid gaunts(there's about 60 of the bugers), the reason for this is that i do not have the time to do it my self, with school(i go to a grammer school, from 8am 'till 4pm, plus an hours travel either way), homework, food and my many conversions i'm working on. i consider my self a fairly good painter, and i would love to have an army painted entirely by me, but i can only dream, so if i find a fairly cheap, decent guy in england, than i'd be more than happy to pay him to do it.
if you are reading this signature, then you are wasting you're time, and i am wasting my time by writing it, so run along now, jimmy, run along.
ive bought painted figs off ebay, some need repainting and some are better painted than i can do! i wouldn't hire a preofessional- too expensive and painting is half the fun anyway!!

Here is my take on it:
As a painter for hire I fall on the other side of the category. Here is what I like about it. I get to paint up miniatures that I probably would not paint if I were simply painting for myself. Painting a diversity of things helps me improve my craft. I consider myself to be a very good painter (definitely not the best but well above average) and I take pride in hearing how enjoyable it is to field models painted by me for someones armies. Which I guess brings it to the question as to why people buy painted miniatures.
I think the number one reason they buy painted miniatures is because of a lack of desire to persue the hobby aspect of the game. Most people probably just want to play and don't care if they are painted or not. Painters for hire definitely fill a niche for this kind of person.
You can also have the type of person that knows his limits and wants either a whole army or special characters painted up to look real nice on the table. They usually have a bit of money to spend and are willing to do what it takes to get that nice army on the table. I paint pretty much for this category. I am not cheap but neither am I expensive. For the time invested in these figures I make a rather low return on investments. I paint mainly to support my hobby and this definitely isn't my day job but overall I really enjoy it.
Finally to answer your question on wether or not I would buy a painted figure. Sure I would. If I could afford the miniatures of some of these really amazing painters I would love to buy a few of their pieces to add to my display.
