If I was to go to the shops and buy a can of black acrylic spraypaint will it look as good as having the chaos black spray paint from gw?
Complicated question. Maybe yes, maybe no.
First the exact brand of paint may have a more gloss or less gloss finish. I often use Krylon matt black, and it is a more matt finish than GW Chaos black. So just as good depends on your taste.
Second, depending on the brand, it may be more or less susceptible to "frosting" or "orange peel". Frosting happens when the paint partially dries on the way to the miniature and leaves a rought sandy finish. Orange peel happens when the solvent in the paint partially attacks the surface of the plastic and leaves a bumpy finish like the outside of an orange.
I like Krylon matt or ultra-matt black. It is less susceptable to frosting than GW in my experience. It can attack the very soft plastic GW uses. You must spray a very light first coat and let it dry. Then you can apply an additional coat of spray to get solid coverage. A little more work perhaps, but much cheaper.
You can also use other brands of spray designed for plastic models (like Testors) but model specific sprays aren't much cheaper.
