    Conversions, conversions, conversions

Over time I've found some great models and supplies that I use for converting my 40k Armies. I was wondering if anyone else has found any models or supplies that make great conversions like these.

Mongoose publishing's Starship troopers make great imperial guard storm troopers.

Warmachine models can add a nice touch to dreadnoughts.

The bugs from starship troopers can make good Tyranids.

The Zerg models from starcraft make good Tyranids.

Tower Hobbies plastic military models online sells cheap models that make great conversions.

    Hirstarts.com sells great scenery stuff.

    So on and so forth...

i would have to agree on the tower hobbies thing, you can use all sorts of vehicle models from 'em for various imp guard tanks and aircraft...

They would however be all non-tournament legal, mind you.

99% of my games are for fun anyway. But where does it say created vehicles can't be used in tournaments? The way I read it you could, as long as you made notice beforehand and got it ok'ed. The main thing was WYSIWYG. And points wise, a created vehicle is at a disadvantage to the regular vehicles.

    Conversion man

This is something that interests me a lot, because conversions are a HUGE part of the hobby for me. Stuff I've found useful...

    - cut up paper clips make great bullet casings

    - cardboard minus a layer is good corrugated iron.

    - Tau antennae can work as scopes

    - GW tree leaf-thingies can be used as any number of blast-type effects.

    - The bottle things on the Apothecary can be painted as krak grenades to make a cool tank hunter guy.

    - Cotton really does look like smoke.

On the subject of tourney-legal proxies, I've been curious about this lately. What level of customization is allowed? Any extraneous or cosmetic modifications that don't look like wargear? How much can you convert a model before it becomes illegal for tourneys? Are they serious that you can put a model on a larger base than usual (within reason)?

Most importantly, can SM Scouts in Fire Warrior armor be legal if WYSIWYG and they follow the normal rules?

What about custom weapons? Would they be legal if they follow the normal rules and it's obvious what weapon they are? (Like sniper rifles modelled from Pulse weapons)

For tournaments I was told it needs to be at least 75% GW model.

From what I know, minimum 50% of GW parts or 100% custom sculpt.

Hmm, most GW organised tourneys stat citadel models only, as such technically any conversion using anything else would be illigal, but this is very hard to police and enforce (how do they know you have used nonGW sand on your base??????)
