Desert Raiders Conversion Help - Now with pics!

I have always thought that the Tallarn Desert Raiders are one of the coolest IG regiments.
I have planned to get some standard cadian IG and convert them with GS (scarfes, looser cloth, and so on) and I need some ideas for more conversions and tips for making these ones that I ahve planned.
I was thinking to get a squad of ten for starters, just to se how it all turns out but in the future a 400p army would be cool.

Kind of bad pics, but I think they are good enough

Take a catachan body as the starting point. Make a thin like thing by pressing some putty to a wet plastic bag and cut arm holes in it. Then wrap it around and smooth it onto the arms. Then do the same thing with the putty but make sleeves instead and put them on the catachans arms and smooth them into the cloak. Then you could make a long thing of thin putty to wrap around the head. If you want a more armored look you could use cadians and then wrap the putty so that it doesn't cover the shoulder pads but in my opinion it would be a lot harder and would make them look too big. Catachans are nice for almost all guard conversions because they are almost an empty slate.

Thanks for the help!

I have tried out some of my ideas on a spare arm. First I filed down then cloth on the arm so that only that little thing just before the hand is left. Then I applied some putty and formed hanging cloth from it. It went quite well.

The problem I see with catachans are that they are to big and muscular for Tallarns, but I will consider youre ideas.

The Catachan minis are plastic so making the arms thinner shouldn't be a problem... You could cut them down using a hobby knife. Don't worry about the appearance of them because you will be covering them with Green Stuff anyway.. I would definately use Catachan minis rather than Cadian ones... ;)

I have done LOTS of cnversion work with Green Stuff (check out my Death Korps in the Gallery if you like) so if you need any tips just ask..

That was some sweet conversions on your site.... Did you use catachans for them?
Im gonna try out both catachan vesions and cadians to see what fits me best. Im also gonna talk to my friends and let them give me their opinion.
I like the posings of the cadians more than the catachans to.
Heres some pics of tallarns if it will help you get some ideas for me :p

Do you have any tips for making theit long cloths and scarfes?

Well again I'd have to press for the Catachans rather that the Cadians.. One of the reasons being that the Cadian helmets are going to be hard to get around (unless you want to buy both Catachan and Cadian sets and do head swaps)...

Are you refering to my Attilan conversions? (the ones with the fluffy hats)..

I will use catachan-heads, I have loads of em :p
I also have a couple of unassembeld catachans at home, maybe I will try out some of the ideas.

no your Death Korps. I saw that some of them was from the steellegion and wondered if you made some of them?
I would like some tips when greenstuffing cloths/robes/scarfes. Mostly how to make good folds

All my Death Korps troops are converted Steel Legion minis.. My Captain is a heavily converted Commissar Yarrick... When doing robes make sure you start off by modeling putty in between the legs to strengthen the conversion.. the gradually build it up around the model and scuplt it using a modeling tool.. It is not as easy as it seems and it will take som practice to get right... The arab-style scarfs can actualy be made by making strips of Green Stuff and wrapping them round the head and shoulders of the mini... a good technique here is to leave the green stuff to dry for a few hours BEFORE attempting to wrap it around the mini. This is because Green Stuff is very difficult to work with when it is 'fresh'...

Check out this link: http://uk.games-workshop.com/convershunklinic/green-stuff/1/ to learn more about wortking with Green Stuff..

Yeah I know, but Im gonna try the one I working with now without shoulder pads and see how it works out.
Okay, I have finished the robe and the belt. I stuck an Cadian knife on the backside of him, between the belt, to make him look a bit like the orginal models.
I will try to start working on the arms today, its gaming night so I dont know if I will have the time.
