For my AoS I'll be fielding a unit of Grave Guard. Now, this fills a Special slot and is a unit of noteworthiness. For this unit I thought I'd do some simple conversions. First, the Standard Bearer would be tackled.
For him I am considering something unique. There's nothing wrong with the standard he comes with (please see Grave Guard Standard) but I thought I'd customize this unit. The Grave Guard are a special unit and also a chance for me to show off a little. So, I thought of doing a conversion with the following parts for the standard.
1 Bat (please see Bat Swarm)
Now, my plan is to glue 2 of the hung zombie guys on each side of the zombiehands standard top. If the symmetry is too much, what do you think, I'll clip one of the hung guys from beneath the shoulder or head. Then, I'll put a bat on the top in the center. Glue this to the pole and voila it is done. But, what bat do you think I should use? I want to ensure that this is not top heavy, which could become a major problem. I know the bearer is metal as is the bat but being that high could throw the center of gravity off and PLOOP it falls over.
The other conversion involves simple shield swaps. The Grave Guard box comes with plain plastic shields that need to be painted. They have no designs on them and they're fairly standard in Fantasy. I could quarter them or something for painting with a red and black, which would be very simple. But, as this is an important unit I thought maybe do some shield swaps. Simple and yet effective. This conversion uses the following parts:
I got this idea from looking at the champion for the Grave Guard. He has the graveguardshield and it is pretty cool looking. So, at first I thought equipping the entire unit with that shield but thought it may be too uniform. So, I searched the Collector's area of the GW US Online Store and came across the archive Blood Dragon Shields. Historically, Vlad Tepes (aka Dracula) was a member of the Holy Roman Empire's Order of the Dragon, which had the mention of killing the Ottoman Turks. It was a super-secret, elite, somewhat religious order. To show the importance of the dragon to the Von Carsteins, it is the Army of Sylvania after all, I thought I'd use the shields with the dragon on them. I'll intersperse these two shields so that it is roughly 50/50 in the unit. I intend to have 20 Grave Guard and also the full command meaning 10 of each shields.
1x Zombie Hands Standard Top = FREE, already owned in bitz box
2x Hung Zombies = FREE, already owned in bitz box
1x Bat = $1.25 USD or $10 USD for entire swarm (can then just take one bat from swarm and use on this)
10x Classic Blood Dragon Shields = $1.50 USD ea
10x Grave Guard Command Shield = $1.00 USD ea
Total = $26.25 USD (with 1 bat) or $35 USD (with bat swarm).
That'll equip 20 model with shields and also do my Grave Guard Standard Bearer conversion.
What do you guys think?
I'm not a huge fan of the two different shields, I'd go with one shield or the other or vary it even more. If you look in the vampire counts book there's some pictures of a unit of graveguard with varying shields, but they keep the same colors (some halved some quartered) and they follow the same motif, a skull.
The banner will most likely be top heavy, you'll have to weight it somehow, fishing weigths glued underneath the base or something like that. Or even magnets if you want to make a magnetic regiment tray for them.
I can read now!
A couple things. The unit you're referring to in the book comes with standard plain shields. Those skulls and everything are painted on by some 'Eavy Metal guy/girl. While creating my AoS bitz box (please see http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ad.php?t=49546 (What's Your Bitz Box Look Like?)) I saw some skulls that were left over from my Skeletons. They're for their shields and I wondered about using them on the Grave Guard instead. I have enough and I can glue them onto the plastic Grave Guard shields. This'd save me money plus be different enough and at the same time it'd be a cohesive conversion that would tie the Grave Guard into my main units...the Militia.Originally Posted by jtm
As to the Standard Bearer, are you saying it'll be top-heavy with the bat or without? I think it'll be fine without although I think it may be a tad bland. Do you think it'd be fine without the bat? At the same time I wondered if the bat was too much.
Those are painted on? I was thinking they used the last edition dark elf warrior transfers... At any rate they're still linked together, I'd go with the skeleton extra shield bitz, would unify the unit and be cheaper.
The bat itself shouldn't be too heavy, what I'm more concerned about is the weight of bat added together with the two hanging zombie guys. If they're plastic zombie things I wouldn't be too worried though, unless you make the standard too tall. But if worse comes to worse you just have to add some weight to it.

From what I can tell they are painted on. Also, the zombie hanging guys are plastic too. I don't know how tall is too tall but I'd have the crossbar hand things going at the top of the pole, not sitting on top just at the top, for the Grave Guard Standard Bearer and glue it there. The bat would sit on top of that in the middle, so his weight would be resting ultimately on the pole, and the hanging guys would be on either side.Originally Posted by jtm
