Now I am looking at this from a purely painting POV, but look at this army and the words GW use to descibe it -
Now GW descibe this army as;Now IMO this is a tabletop standard army, I have seen much better. The display board is stunning but the painting? Look at the Damsel, she is bug eyed and he face is not even smooth looking. When we saw John Stentz's incredible Bretonnian army at the 2005 Chicago Grand Tournament, we knew that we had to snap some photos of these beautifully painted and modeled army
Do you think GW are attempting to promote the fact that you don't have to be a GD for soemthing to look good (well average) or are they saying "You can aim for this and still get models in WD" ?
Some of the models look good and some look terrible. The Grail Reliqueaerfafeafe (sp?) looks pretty good, but that damsel is horrible. Her eyes are so badly painted that I want to retch my dinner everywhere.
I wonder how this got on the GW site... Weird.
Well, since GW become we-must-make-a-lot-of-money-now-guys, the overall quality of all their publications have decreased.
Most of their showcase-armies in the Codexes/Army Books look tabletop and no more.
I would like to see those incredibly converted/painted models instead. But there is always a chance som kid sees a well-converted model and runs to his local store to pick it up and finds out that it doesn't exist. That makes a sad kid and GW dont want that.
I don't recall the article in 309 - will have to go back and look - but I am pretty sure that if there were pictures they were smaller than the ones on the site. Larger pictures really do a number on the visible "flaws" on a figure for sure. They most likely look much better on the game table in person.
That said - Maybe this was one of the better painted armies at that grand tournament. Who knows.

Like da mighty camel was saying, people want to buy converted models. My friend once saw the scorpion like defiler (this is in high school) and asked how much it cost. He also once asked was a life-size lasgun model a real one but he was just being stupid that time I think.

Well out here the GW picture guys are weird. They take pictures of the good armys like normal... but when eer there is an army with something naked or growing a peinis out of it's head, they seem to be obligated to showcase it. My blood angels were going to be showcased in '04, but some slaneesh army that was painted like crap beet me out of the spot cause their deamon prince was naked with boobies and a penis with the dark eldar slave girls below it. Personaly, I don't think they should showcase this stuff. I see young gamers all over the place at these tourniments and games days. They need to have some one with morals for the younger gamers, so they can have a good time with out their parent saying... "omg, don't look at that... lets go over here". I know if I was one of them I'd be pissed, not to mention a parent seeing this could make their child stop playing cause of some one elses crap I personlay don't have kids yet, but it would sertainly bother me.
Tomb Kings, Marines, Eldar
That damsel in particular is terrible, and the rest ain't much better. *scoffs with the elitism of a newbie*
Message to GW: Make more ForgeWorld rules official...
I think GW showcases some armies for the overall look and not how good painted, it's like a comfort for the people that don't paint so good, so they can think that even though they don't paint so well it wont make the game any less fun.
Also, sometimes it feels like they prefer to show off an army with numeros conversions instead of a good paint job to show what can be done with their various kits.
But then again, it's GW will we ever be able to understand why they do things, how stupid they may be.
I was considering getting Dark Eldar once but they have to many units not wearing enough.

Bah, I can paint better than the tool who did that!
I mean c'mon GW what are you on? If that was the best painted army at a tourney, that tourney must have been attended by Chimpanzees with hand-eye coordination problems.
