Now, this is stolen from the warseer forums but...
Just wondering what everyone thinks about the current standards and painting style of 'eavy metal. what would you like to see more of? What was the best/worst paint job in your opinion?
The new Ultramarines Land Raider (for the Calgar model) blew my head off. I think that's 'eavy metal's doing, anyway. Can't remember for certain.
I like how they have gone for a more stylized approach, and paint the models more like they are artworks and less like they are models. At least that's what I've been seeing in my AU WDs.
In the older WD's and codices they used lots of blending to make realistic effects, and let the models speak for themselves alot more with highlights and shading. Now you can often actually see the brush strokes the painter has put on and the models look more dramatic and less realistic, sort of more like a fantasy calender painting than a photograph of a real soldier.
I like it.
As long as they stick to earth tones and realistic colors, then I'll be happy.
I never really cared for the uber-gayness of rainbow colored Eldar and Space Marines. In fact, I like natural tones so much that I own every single Brown, and Green color that GW produces, but only one or two of the Red-Orange, Blue-Purple color sets.
My advice to the 'Eavy Metal team: Keep it real.
Yeah I like the way they use dark and dramatic "realistic" colours now too. The old Iyanden in Codex: Eldar are a perfect example of what I don't like in a colour scheme. if I had an Iyanden army I would use a sort of midnight blue for their helmets and instead of yellow use bone colours. Bright yellow is just not cool outside children's television.
The seasonal aspect wood elves in a recent AUWD are a perfect example of what I like about the newer 'Eavy Metal team's stuff. Those guys looked awesome.
i agree with both parties that the eavy' metal team needs more earth tones. although i agree with the need for more earth tones, it would look quite boring if all the different armies were just varying shades of brown and green. thats probably the only reason GW made all the bright, garish colors for the SM and eldar. as for the quality of their work..... i cant complain they are doing MUCH better jobs than i could, and i personally think the models look fine. and as for the Marneus Calgar land raider, i think that was an eavy' metal artist that made it.
Don't take offense to this, but do you guys come from any sort of art background? Because I love those bright colors, I wanted to paint my Thousand sons Bright Pink and Yellow, but I was just starting and couldn't find the right colors for the job... so I went with plan B. and just did Regal Blue and Chainmail, with Enchanted Blue accents. I love the bright colors, it draws attention to the models. I have always liked the eye catching models the best. Something I myself am not too good with
Oh, Well thats just a Fine Art Student's take... I'm not trying to offend anyone against me, just defending the 'eavy metal guys
You Can't Stop the Eighp
Had Tzeentch before I knew how to play :P
"Eavy Metals okay.
I really like the new paint scheme for the Ultramarines, the dry brushed regal blue and gold, I think it's one of their best paint jobs to date.
However I have noticed a decline in their skill level, while I myself do not claim to be a master, looking at their models closely you can see spots left blank with undercoat in which in some cases makes it look like they didn't care enough to paint it nicely, Other than that I envy so much of their painting, I wish I was skilled enough to paint that thin little band of orange on the eyes. The worst painting I've ever seen by them was the green and white tau in the BGB, their horrible and very blobby and theirs no detail whatsoever.
Overall, they win some they lose some, some I like, some I don't. But personally, I like the Dark Greens and blacks and browns, which is one reason I picked the Dark Angels, though I painted their bolters black instead of red... on that note I hate the SM's with yellow and black stripes on their powerfists and I also hate the red and bright yellow weapons and insignia on the old UM's.
Oh and I do have some artistic backround if that makes you feel better Centum...

i dont have a problem with the eavy' metal guys painting as much as GW's choice of colors. i mean what soldier would seriously go to war in a bright Yellow/Red suit of armor? probably none, they would most likely be wearing a form of camoflague, or more neutral colors.
