If I had a plastic box set of some plastic SMs or IGs I think that would be best, but models are useful fighting, and tough to lose to scenery.

So, I'm thinking of creating a master cast of the models I have with green stuff and then creating replications of those with more green. Crude, but I think it would work simply because dead models would be more apart of the scenery and show decay, and even some rubble covering them. You could even bend the cast and adjust the model so it looks like it conforms to it's base and add the wounds, like removed limbs, holes, etc.

Has anyone tried someything like this? Any more thoughts on creating this element?

The GW archive used to carry the old dead marine models. I don't know if they still have them, but they were cool.

If you're using swamp or sand terrain, you can use extra soldier bitz to give your corpses a buried look.

To the above "question" on if it still exsists wounded space marines I would have to say yes... just look in the GW archive.

Other than that here's what I have done on previous occosions.
Combine either imperial guard models or space amrines with WHFB undead zombies.
They should have a lot of different parts to use.

Thanks for the replies all

Do you think it's possible to heat plastic IG or SMs just until they can be slightly moved? Just so they are a little less standing stiff position. Has anyone tried that?

Just a side note. I think it would be very cool if you had a dead version of all your models, so you can replace them as they go down. The battlefield would tell a great story when you are all done.

Could get crowded, but would nevertheless look cool. I'm thinking of doing something similar with vehicles... a blown up leman russ made out of card would look great. I would also use IG for a number of reasons:

One: It's not like a single guardsmen is that great anyway
Two: There much more likely to die
Three: You can have lasguns lying around, but don't you think a bolter would be looted?

Two: There much more likely to die
To this I have to say, yes...true

Three: You can have lasguns lying around, but don't you think a bolter would be looted?
And to this one... yes here too.

I like the idea of the blown up leman russ.
It really puts some character into the gaming table.
But try to use bonies from other races too...
Using only IG would proparbly just be too uniform.
