i mean, for example, collecting neat characters and big tyranids and stuff and painting them for show, it sounds neat, but until i have an actual army i wont be doing that

Every now and then if I see a grand spanking model ill buy it if I have money just for the grand spanking model, that usually how I start a new army. Its also a good break after painting squad after squad of my other armies mainly chaos -black legion and khorne and tau

Well sometimes I do.. I have about twenty or so minis that don't fit into any of my armies.. Really cool minis like Logan Grimnar and others that I just HAVE to own... It's also a good way of painting something new without having to actually start a new army.

I used to paint a lot of Gundam models. If you get the Japanese ones (not the ****<word edited by the mod for being inappropriate for the board> american made) they are half decent, and pretty big. Fully functional , able to move all the joints in any posistion is pretty sweet.

I don't play any wargames (except for risk), so if I end up buying some war hammers i'll paint them for show. I think they look cool.

That's how I started out, back in '92 - just buying models I liked and painting them, but then a family member suggested I collect an army and play 40k (this was only a year or two after 2nd edition came out&#33, which I did, and ever since then everything I've bought has been for my armies. I am thinking about buying some of the LOTR characters just to paint up nice though.

Not sure if my painting skills will be up to scratch....but I'll just have to see...lol

I haven't bought any models the don't fit into my army just to paint, but I have been thinking about it quite alot recently. I'm thinking of getting some Daemonhunter models(they are just plain awesome) and probably some of the new Witchhunter models. Certain minatures just stand out and I feel that overwhelming artists' urge to get them just to test my skills.
