I decided to try dipping for my first Tyranid army. Following various guides and links, i painted the basecolors a shade brighter then i wanted them (this is my first miniature army, i've done models, but nothing this small, so forgive the sloppy basecoating for now )then dipped them in minwax polyshades glossy antique Walnut (i wanted to glossy look for the tyranid, the just hatched look if you will) and i'm pretty happy with how then turned out. I was particularly pleased with the blue tongue.
The following are before and after pictures of the same models, with only dipping and letting them dry seperating the two.
(and yes, i realize i used the wrong head (or rather skull) on the one with the white claws >_< )
A couple of thoughts i had:
all in all i'm happy with how dipping turned out for the 'nids. For the bigger models i'll be painting the stain on, but for the smaller guys this makes life a LOT easier
- I may use some satin topcoat on the carapaces to get them a little less slimy
- I want to redo the eyes, i'm not happy with how they came out
- obviously, some basing is in order.
- i think some highlighting using a brighter colour and drybrushing before i dip might make the effect a little more "pop"
- i REALLY need to clean up the molding flash on all the models before i prime and paint  I can't believe for the price we pay for these things that the molding is so bad.
That is what Tyranids should look like! Slimey and discusting. Good painting and nice colorscheme.
Simply awsome.

I still don't think I'll ever be a fan of the 'Dipping' Method. It just doesn't set right with me for some reason, I have yet to figure out why. I guess it's because it looks 'sloppy' to me...
I've bene all over the board with my feelings on dipping. I'm not particularly happy with how the stain pooled at the bottom of the tailbone, and the fact that can't really be corrected sits poorly with me. However, i feel it gives a really nice "organic" feel for some types of army, specifically tyranids.
Also, dealing with having to get my army up and running ASAP for games with friends, the time it saves is very welcome.
We'll see how the carnifex works out with the stain painted on. I'm going to be doing each type of 'nid a slightly different shade, all in red/brown colours to keep with the army theme.. darker will be saved for the bigger units, with lighter/brighter colours being for the smaller, faster guys.
i think they look great
with how fast it is, you really cant complain lol
leave the moderating to the moderators
if pro is the opposite of con, does that mean progress is the opposite of congress?
those are pretty good. plus the method was made for doing all those spinegaunts quicly!
Everyone makes mistakes. mine was to leave her head in the fridge.
WOW! I never really liked bright red 'nids before but you make them look really good and they do look like they've just hatched too!

Could just use a glossy spray if people don't like the pooling of the dip. I think they look good but since it does pool in the grooves, it doesnt look good on all models. such as say... blue models, won't look to good with with brown.
This looks very nice. I'd like to try this technique on my 'Nids, but I think they might not fit with the rest. I may try it anyway, just to see how it turns out. Yours look good enough for me!
I do apologise. My previous signature was positively turd. Let's hope this'll be better.
Aw, crap. I failed.
That bone color worked really well. I think the nails should be the same color. The red doesn't look as nice as the bone, mabie not enough contrast?
