I'm doing up a Mechanised Space Marine army with a strong Cybernetic feel to it. I've got two of the new Techmarines and only plan on using one as a techmarine. I want to use the other one for a conversion for my commander. Has anyone done any conversions using the new body or have any advice?
I would do exactly the opposite of what I did when I made a techmarine out of Cypher: convert a techmarine into a normal character by taking off as much of the techie stuff as you can. Ditch the backpack with all the arms, then slice off the scanner and replace with weapon as necessary. Do something similar with the other arm, and take off as many of the dangling pipes as seems right.
The potential problem with this as a conversion idea is that you're effectively taking a specialised character and making him bog-standard, a bit like converting an apothecary into a normal marine by filing off the important bits. However, you should get the interesting plate armour, which can look quite techy. It also depends whether the look you want is high-tech (smooth white surfaces, like Tau or Eldar) or industrial (guard tanks, etc).
Depending on how confident you feel, you could slice off the top of the techmarine's head and put your commander's head there, peeking over the armour like a veteran sergeant or a Grey Knight. Some extra purity seals and perhaps a cloak should help, too. The techmarine armour would make very good artificier armour, too. Just make sure you take off the Adeptus Mechanicus cog insignia.
