Knowing your predicament, I have this advice to offer you from experiance. Wait.
When I started (as I told you) I did silly things, I did stuff like this, and I'm kicking myslef because A] I wasted alot of things I Could have trades and B] I ended up never using them.
The Concept is okay, but IG are more into foxholes and bunkers/pillpillboxed rather than turrets.
One thing you should look into getting is some Balsa wood, while not as strong as the Plastic Sprue, it is much easier to work with, plus I think it was 3/16 X 3/16 that was a good scale for stuff like your GL 'turret', Id' Bring a mini to compare the scale with.
Also Wait till you have lots of new pieces you can use, I've Got about 4 Craft Boxes (the ones with all the little compartments) full of Bitz, just start hoarding!
If you DO plan to continue with these, I'd get my hands on a tank, as the accessories from the tank bitz could really help make it look more than tubes with guns.
And Later you may even want to try making the turret so it can pop off the tank and onto the turret and back again.
Wether you listen or to me or not, good luck!
Use plastic-card as a base for them, and use superglue instead of tac
