Welcome to Librarium Online!
I decided awhile ago to start mixing things up with my Marines by mixing chapters. The majority of my collection is painted in Black Templar colors and I have a few Imperial Fist (with Templar crosses) models painted up now. What I'm debating with myself right now is how many chapters I can mix in without making things look like I bought a bunch of pre-painted models off of eBay and threw them together, ie. random-as-hell.
I like the idea of a very diverse army, however considering a good 80% of my force will be Black Templars... that's not going to work. Would simply splashing in a second chapter probably look the best, or would mixing in one or two more balance things out more?
You play your game, I'll play mine.
Well from a gameing stand point this wouldn't work. At least not with Chapters that have their own rules. You could mix them up if you were making an army similar to the one in WD 300 US. That was a army by Jason Buyaki I think. It was a crusading army made from Lamenters, Mantis Warriors, Red Scoprions, and the Relvilers I think. They had the same underlying rules however. You can't legally mix the Black Templars with another marine chapter in the same army because the rules are different. That would negate the point of balancing the game. However, if you are just looking into this because you enjoy painting them I would follow Jason's lead and make one squad from each chapter and then make a second if you still need more marines. An even spread of the different chapters would look better.

my current marines army is a mish-mash...
alot of squads of different colors,
but all with the same shoulder pad identifying their army...
i just run 'em all under the same rules (using Vanilla with a traits) and allow the optional parts of the traits apply to only certain squads...
if you're looking at mostly BTs tho...
you might want to see if you can emulate the part you want from BTs in Vanilla
otherwise you're lookin at having to go Multi Division
(in which case, gotta get the "OK" from the opponents, and field 2k of BTs before bringing in any others...)
Pictures of the Smigs Army for your amusement....
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
