Hi all. To help with my painting skills and get myself out of a rut I'm in that involves no painting or modeling for the past month or so, I am going to paint up a squad of something. This will probably just be for painting so I can get to if faster, but who knows, I might mess with some things (especially if I could steal a bolter from the model for my marines)...
The problem is, I don't know what I should paint... I have a list of things I would LIKE to paint, and heck, I might do more than one... (or more likely a squad and one or two of the single character models)
So here are the ideas I have.
My favorite so far, an Iquisitor and retinue.
IG command squad
any aspect warrior squad
csm lord and marines
maybe some steel legion or storm troopers
and some individual models I'd like to paint (also includes some of the above w/o attached squads)
psyker or priest
bassically any SM sp character
So, what I want to know is what wouldgive me the widest range of techniques to practice and what you think looks the best. As I am trying to improve and fave fun at the same time, I want it to be a good choice, and look good too.
Thanks for your help.
I picked up the WH Inquisitor & retinue boxed set and could definately recommend it. It gives you a nice array of things to play with and looks pretty good. I really wouldn't go for the aspect warriors if you're looking for variety... you're really only going to be painting power armor and gems, without too much else. The Seer Council can be fun, but there isn't terribly much variety there either. It's pretty much the one model repeated several times with slightly different poses.
You play your game, I'll play mine.
Yeah, there's really almost nothing else in the whole 40K range that manages to cram as much sheer variety into one unit as an Inquisitor with a retinue (WH or DH).
Armour? check. Skin? check. Hair? check. Metallics? check. Cloth? check. All manner of creepy bionic thingies? check. Clean, professional soldiers? check. Frothing lunatics with chainswords? check.
Chaos Marines sound cool, and I definitely reccommend Kasrkins if you're thinking of Stormtroopers.
Librarians and Assassins are always neat to paint, and they're pretty cool models as well. I'd suggest looking through some Chaos stuff too - Ahriman's a neat painting challenge (I'm working on him for a painting contest as I type this), and Kharn is really cool, if a bit monochromatic (lotsa red and skin, but hey - it's Khorne, what do you expect?).
Thanks for the help. I think I will be doing an Inquisitor and retinue. One question; what ever happened to the hierophant model? You know, that dude with the huge sword and beard who looked all crazy... I can't find the model anywhere on either the US or UK site in both the DH and WH model ranges...
