I'd like to make wings for one of my broods of warriors, but im not sure what to use for them, i dont want to make them look pathetic, green stuff is too heavy so im told and i don't want to burn a hole in my wallet buying wing sprues, help, sugesstions?
My friend used some mage knight figures of mine. Here is an example of one of the figs:
The wings come off of the figure and look really nice. His warriors came out really cool looking.
I know that ebay auction is outrageous, but you might find a good deal at one of the online figure places.
Hope that might help.

You can make a frame using some scything talons, wire and gs and then make the membrane out of some papermache or something. Don't know how well it would turn out though. I came across the same problem for making wings and I just ended up using some gargoyle wings which aren't scaled too badly for warriors. If you want to spend the money you can always use the ones on Forge World but they are really expensive.

Leave so wire poking out where you would intend the joint of the wing, where it connects to the body to be.
Now pour PVA over the area where you drew your wings and where the wire is in the shape of your wings. It doesn't matter if some spills over the edges.
Allow it to dry.
Once dry take a scalpel and cut out the wings. You need to now apply a coat of PVA to the other side of the wings where the paper was laying on your table.
You will find the wings with the wire inside are bendy enough for for you to manipulate them from a flat pose to something more life-like.
You may now apply green stuff miliput or whatever to fill in cracks and create details, joints gross alien veins and so on.
The wire that was sticking out at the joint of the wing can now be used to pin it to the Tyranid warrior and then once glued in place you may apply green stuff to secure it.
This method sounds odd but it does work.
It does require some practice getting the wings right so I suggest you have a few trial runs it's only paper, PVA, and some wire so if anything goes wrong you can easily start again.
Finally I strongly suggest if you are going to make your own wings wether you use my method someone else's or your own you need to examine real-life wings.
Doing an image search on the net will give you a much better understanding of them.
what type of wire do u recommend using, how thick?
The wire I that should be used varies Pathofskulls. On Tyranid warriors wires that are used to make jewelry can be used. To be more precise pin, like what is used to pin a broach to clothing.
Anything which seems to have some strength in it and requires effort to bend.
Wires that come coiled and flop about like a loose spring are a bad idea because they have a limited capability to hold any weight. The place where the wing joins to the Tyranids body is where all of the weight is being supported and must be strong.
There are other kinds of wire out there shop around look in places like gardening centers and shops where they sell drills sanders all that stuff for home repair, we call these places DIY shops you may call them that where you live too. Basically it must be a stiff wire and you will need to use your personal judgement on what suits you best.
On anything larger like a winged Hive tyrant I would suggest using a coat hanger wire.
That will be much stronger and able to support the weight of the wings on a monstrous creature.A coat hanger could also be used on Tyranid warriors but check that you don't think it's to big.
Another way to possibly make wings that I am going to try but haven't tried yet is to use wire mesh. Beware this idea has only just made it out of my head but I think it has potential.
The wire mesh I mean should be thin enough to cut, probably needing garden clippers and be fused. Fused meaning it is a very thin piece of metal with lots of little holes in it not lots of little wires simply wound together like a tiny chain link fence.
The image of the wings could be drawn on a sheet of paper like before and then the mesh cut to the shape of the wings. Then PVA can be poured on the paper and then the mesh laid over that. It then has PVA poured over the mesh and another piece of paper laid over it. It would probably need a wire in the arm for support and to stick it into the model.
This is a conbination of from one side to the other, paper then PVA then wire mesh then more PVA and finally another outside layer of paper.
This "in theory" should provide a tough but flexible wing that can be bent how we want it and then details applied with green stuff.
I hope all of that helps you on your way Pathofskulls.
That's perfect for what I'm doing... putting wings on my Kroot, poor things XDOriginally Posted by warmonkey
Good idea, thanks ^^

Another place that could give useful Tyranid warrior wings is the GW online store.
In the Dark elf section Morathi's dark pegasus has very Tyranid-like wings.
I have Morathi and the wings of her dark pegasus are ideal for Tyranid warriors all that would be needed would be for them to be pinned into place and secured with green stuff.
