Welcome to Librarium Online!
I play Chaos (Alpha Legion). Currently, my marines' armor is black with silver trim and blood red detailing. They have the Alpha Legion symbol on their shoulder pads and the army list is built using Alpha Legion rules. This is sufficient for them to be considered variant Legionnaires in friendly games, but I don't know if this applies to tournaments too. I looked everywhere, and I couldn't find a straight answer in another thread (I may have missed it, there are a LOT of threads).
So, do non-standard paint schemes prevent me from using specific traitor legions in tournaments? (ie., the aforementioned black and silver Alpha Legion.)
I'm not sure why the paint scheme matters, as long as specific traitor legions are allowed (don't play chaos, so have no clue) and that you make sure that your opponent knows what you are playing before the game. (AKA not just after deployment...)
As long as you submit a legal list, its ok. You can't be barred from a tourney because your alpha legion isn't exactly legion colours.
The only time I would forsee that you might be docked points is if your paint scheme
diverges too far, like for example, if you were to have blaze orange marines for the alpha legion. And even then, there's only a small section in RTT score sheets that asks you to score the look of your oponent's army, the closer the army looks to how the army is "supposed" to look, the higher the score. Especially with the Alpha legion, there's wiggle room for fluff and interpretation of why your legion diverges a little bit, since ALL factions of the alpha legion are completely independent.
So, in summary, unless the coordinators specifically say that everything is STRICTLY enforced in the codex,I don't think you will be blocked from using a specific legion because it doesn't "look" like what the codex is saying it should look like(within reason), as long as you submit a legal list. If you get oponents that are "purists" on color scheme, you might lose some points.
W/D/L Eleventy trillion billion/NONE/ NONE - I am STILL rulezor!
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
I know for a fact in the Eldar codex it says that you can use any colour scheme that you want. The rules provided are simply representitive of several armies, therefore as long as you inform you opponent that "my green eldar are El-Shur Craftworld and they use Ulthwe rules" for example, you are well within the rules.
I don't know if it says this in the other codices though, I can't imagine why it wouldn't.
Having said that I wouldn't try and use another standard colour scheme (from a different legion) to represent your army. What I mean is your Alpha Legion should not use an Iron Warriors colour scheme for example.

Well, I'm glad that got cleared, now I don't have to strip and repaint them all if I ever want to play at a more organized level. Also, it's a significant variation as the dark blue/black is the main color on the power armor, but since they are both dark, dark colors, they look very similar. And while it may strike some people as Black Legion-ish, the total lack of gold on the marines is a pretty obvious give away.
