For the last few months I have received many PMs asking how I made my Death Riders of Krieg. So I decided that I might as well post a guide on the forum.
-Bretonnian Warhorse (I used both the old and new variants)
-Steel Legion Sergeant (The one WITHOUT the ork head in his hand)
-Rough Rider Legs
-Rough Rider Hunting Lance Arm
-Chaos Vehicle Accessory Sprue
Alternative components for the sergeant
-Steel Legion Lieutenant (The one with the bolt pistol in his hand)
-Catachan Jungle Fighters sprue
-Rough Rider Legs
-Rough Rider Hunting Lance
-Chaos Vehicle Accessory Sprue
Step 1 - The horse
Assemble the Bretonnian Warhorse as usual. If you wish you can carve or file away the 'shields' on the cloth. Using Green Stuff, you can create some kind of mask to make the horse look slightly mechanical. The Krieg horses are bionically enhanced so you can really do whatever you like here. I chose to go with the 'goggle' look. Cut off a spike from the Chaos Vehicle Accessory Sprue and glue it onto the horse's forehead to give it a more grim appearance.
Step 2 - The rider
Take the Steel Legion Sergeant and cut him in half under the belt. A small saw is the best thing to use here. Cut off his chainsword and bend his arm inward to give him that 'holding the reigns' look. Now, attach him to the Rough Rider Legs and fix any gaps with Green Stuff. Glue the Rough Rider Hunting Lance Arm in place. It should fit perfectly. Now, you may notice that the hunting lance arm is short sleeved so it is necessary to sculpt a matching sleeve to the other arm. This will make them look slightly different from your infantry but personally I find that to be a cool touch. Finally, give the rider a spike on his helmet like the horse.
Death Rider Sergeant
I wanted my sergeant to look a bit different from the rest of my Death Riders so I decided to use the Lieutenant mini instead of the sergeant. The horse is made the same way as above but I repositioned its legs to make it be rearing up on its hind legs.
Cut the lieutenant in half below the belt and carefully cut off his left arm completely. This is tricky so take your time. Now, use the sword arm from the Catachan sprue and carve down some of the muscles. Attach it to the lieutenant and fix it with Green Stuff. Make the short sleeves with Green Stuff as with the normal Death Riders. When the Green Stuff is dry, attach the guy to Rough Rider Legs. Finally, attach the Hunting Lance to his back and you have your self a Death Rider Sergeant.
And here they are. Have fun in the converting room!
If you have any questions, just post them here.
Very nice job.
I particularly like the blue bubbles over the horse's eyes.
Maybe I missed it in your post, but did you order most of the parts as sprues? Or did you end up with a lot of left over parts?

Brilliant. I'd sell my soul to be able to do work like that...if I hadn't all ready sold it for...y'know what those are great minis! (Y)
very nice- and very inspirational too- its great to see projects like this, and looking so darn good too. I plan to convert some rough riders and i will take a lot of good advice from your guide, cheers!

Insipered by your conversions im doing something similar for my steellegion with a couple of differences. I was wondering how you did the troopers left arms to be holding the reigns. I cant manage to bend them?
Love the models! Great job.
