I'm trying to start off a vehicle-heavy CSM army. There's little cooler than seeing a heavy tank bear down of a few troops, and they're powerful, too. The only problem is they're relatively expensive. A single predator, for example, costs almost twice as much as two squad choices.
So I'm thinking of representing vehicles with marine squads instead. For example, a Rhino could be several marines carrying combat shields. Squads could "enter" via a breach in the back, could fire over dropped shields (although only two can do so at a time to avoid compromising the armor), etc. Alternatively, a predator could be presented by a bike with plate-holding robotic arms attached. The arms could swivel to protect the bike from shots, and soldiers on notches in the shield could fire lascannons/heavy bolters/autocannons. This design would be about $20 USD cheaper than just buying a pred.
Has anybody tried something like this before? If so, I'd be interested in design tips and advice. Heck, is the idea even a viable one?
Not sure if that'd be legal at all....but like, do the marines piggy back on the others or something?
That would be super amusing..

That's exactly what I was thinking, damn it'd be cool.Originally Posted by Wulfbanes

I think there are definate questions about the legality of this..
I mean, these marines can supposedly run faster than the squad inside could have done on its own, and they can all be killed by a single lascannon shot? What does immoblized mean.. all their legs have been blown off?.. And they don't have any guns, and they don't actually fight in CC despite being infantry..
That, and it's just really odd. I can see it being funny, and it wouldn't exactly stop me playing with you. But 20 dollars isn't that much when it means people won't look at your army and go 'what the hell..'
Perhaps they aren't as worried about being shot, and can safely focus more on covering more ground.Originally Posted by The_Giant_MantisLucky hit causes one of the "power shields" to explode?and they can all be killed by a single lascannon shot?Something like that, yeah...What does immoblized mean.. all their legs have been blown off?..Hey, those shields are pretty heavy! And they don't have any guns, and they don't actually fight in CC despite being infantry..
EDIT: Alternatively, the bolters they carry could represent some of the vehicle's weapons.I've started having second thoughts, but a minor screwup with one shipper has left me with some extra marines. I'll try it and see how it looks in the end. That, and it's just really odd. I can see it being funny, and it wouldn't exactly stop me playing with you. Maybe buy some bikers and connect the bikes like a square with biker with a shoulder mounted lascannon in the middle.
