Writing small text (purity seals, etc.)?

    Hi guys,

I was experimenting this weekend on the best way to get "text" written on purity seals, etc. First I tried pure GW black ink with my smallest detail brush - meh. Then I tried flat black paint (I have a mix of Tamiya, GW and Vallejo, but I think my blacks are Tamiya - just what I have left over from my boat/plane/etc. modeling days), watered down a bit, but I didn't like that either.

Then I remembered that I had some ultra-fine black markers left over from my quilting days: permanent Pigma Micron pens by Sakura. Dug out my 01 pen (which is like .25mm) in black and voila! Now I just need better control and it'll look awesome.

My question is: is this cheating? Is it cool or uncool to use a pen instead of a brush to do this sort of detail? What are y'alls thoughts on this?

Well I think it's OK, especially if t looks better than painting it. Just try and do it in a slight italic writing style so it looks better

Will do; going to try to take some peectures tonight. We finished the Macragge box this weekend and they've been great practice before starting on our armies*.

Really not cheating. In fact, many painters draw the banners and such that they do before they paint them or write the text on banners with pencils.

Will be intrested in some pics as well!

It ain't cheating. I do it all the time when I write something on my models. You have more controle over the "paint" and get the same results.

I too use the sakura Micron pigma pens. I have found that the .005 sized tips work the best. If you can do it with a brush then have at it - otherwise this is just a tool to make things easier!

Here are some results I have got with the .005 pigma pens:
