Hey, below are pics of my first warrior unit for dwarf's. Not all the models have been made for the unit yet, but the ones that are there are finished. All constructive criticsm is encouraged, like on choice of colours, highligting etc.
I'm also looking for advice on how to paint a longbeards unit. I think I'd definitely highlight the beards more, making them look lighter, but what about axtra things to make them stand out as being elite? I was thinking maybe painting the axe heads with the red to yellow effect, not sure though. Any suggestions are welcome.
Not bad for a first unit, they are of a decent quality. A few things though, unless you are going for complete unification then alternating beard colours will add a splash of colour, because at the moment they are all monotone and looks dull. Adding browns, blondes and even a few red beards in here or there is a great idea.
The gold/bronze look is rather good, it blends nicely especially on the standard. The silver though I cannot say the same, looks dull. A dark wash then highlighted up would make it look better - maybe even a glaze to tie the highlights together. The red or brown looks alright, though it seems the highlights are hard to see but this maybe the pictures fault. The black is too harshly highlighted, this is a problem with many people. Using pure codex grey or its equiverlent is bad as the stark contrast is too much, I would suggest mixing the grey with black to make it darker but still visable - takes practice as black is hard to highlight correctly. The flesh I think is a tad dark for my tastes, maybe an extra highlight or two.
My only other comments are the picture is rather dark, it may alter people perceptions on the minis. I would spend some time fiddling about with your camera and /or your photo editing software, takes practice but worth it. And consider a blueish background, try cyan fading to white; that tends to be a good one.
As to the Longbeards, giving them whte or off white beards is always a favourite of myself and maybe give them a more regal look by taking your gold to a lighter shade or make it more promiment.
Thanks for all of that. I agree with you on the black highlights, they are too dominant, i'll try and fix them up sometime. As far as the beards go, realisticly they would have different coloured beards, but as you hinted at, I'm trying to go for a unified look throughout the unit and army. I like symmetry and order I'll work on the silver and try and get it to be a bit brighter with highlights.
Thanks also for the tips on taking pics. They are a bit dark, which i'll try and imporve on with the next ones. I'll also add the cyan gradient background.
Thanks again for the putting in the time with the good comments. They're greatly appreciated.
...a bit on the dark side, but I would not be ashamed to put them on any gaming table!
Looks very good indeed but it would be easier to specify if the pic was lighter.
